I never understood the hype about Mario either. But I played Zool on PC for couple hours back then and it felt as soulless, empty and boring as Mario. Was the Amiga conversion botched in some way, perhaps ? I would certainly rate Zool the same as Mario from my standpoint, but I haven't played either game more than couple hours as there were dozens significantly better games at the time... |

No, but it is boring in any imaginable way. Never understood the high ratings in magazines.

Like most occidental games of this era, this game was impressive to see in magazines, but terrible to play .

I was disappointed with Zool as well. The skiddy control and limited view area in front of you make it impossible not to be hit, too much inertia, enemies respawning too quickly, too many awkward walls to climb one-jump-at-a-time, utterly unguessable puzzles like the piano. The Sonic and Mario games generally have much better, fairer design. It doesn't feel like a console game either - no two-button controller support, a choice of bad music and bad sound, pretty mediocre graphics too. I get the feeling people reviewed the game they WANTED it to be, not the game it actually was. Zool 2 is actually a better game, though it lacks the admitted smoothness of the first one. Mags outside of the UK mostly scored it in the 80%, which I think is still too much but certainly closer to reality than what Amiga Action and Amiga Format said.

I remember the previews in the magazines for it long before it came out and the graphics looked great..... and then we got to see it, and my oh my, ridiculously slow.
