Normal mode for A600; I hadn't changed it when I got the error.
Then I chose 2 colors, but the A600 doesn't reflect any changes (since IPrefs gives error and doesn't load). Until I can execute IPrefs, any changes to screen/keyboard/ecc. are not taken in to account However, I reverted partially to the RAM: settings, and it works again. I have 670KB free, more or less. |

I presume that "normal" means PAL 640x256, 4/8 colours, which isn't really a lot required for the screen.
Do you have anything in the user-startup or WBStartup? Last edited by meega; 12 January 2009 at 16:51. |

If I boot it in WinUAE I get 200KB more free RAM, probably because I boot from the CF directly (avoiding to boot from the floppy and load cardreset, cardpatch, movesys etc.). Alexh is right, I should/will buy an internal IDE/CF adapter and/or a memory expansion. I don't know if it's worth it... perhaps I'll get an A1200. About the user-startup, it only includes a path for Directory Opus. No strange commands... In WBStartup I think I have nothing special. It's a plain normal installation of WB 2.1. However, the problem arises from IPrefs, and I don't know why. |

Cardreset and cardpatch are A1200 programs. Not required for A600 although I doubt that will save you any RAM.
Do not forget that A1200 trapdoor RAM cards are more expensive than A600 ones. You could consider getting a PCMCIA SRAM card? |

In the documentation is written "Requires: Kickstart 37.300+, A600/A1200" and "Requires: Kickstart 37.299+, A600/A1200". See on Aminet: http://se.aminet.net/util/boot/CardReset.readme http://uk.aminet.net/util/boot/CardPatch.readme Quote:

Hi,
I tried booting without cardreset and cardpatch (gained 2KB only ). It seems to boot without problems. Perhaps they are needed more if the PCMCIA card is hot-extracted/hot-inserted? (I never do it, since it's now my equivalent of DH0: ) Hope the system is stable without them Another issue I don't understand is WHY yesterday I got 676KB RAM free, and this morning, with the same configuration, I got 664KB RAM free Last edited by Supamax; 12 January 2009 at 19:12. |

Get a trapdoor expansion. 646KB of RAM out of a beefied workbench is not that bad.
If you don';t use them, skipping all the preferences loading will save you loads of memory (ie. skip all the ENVARC and iPrefs shit). Look at this startup I just thought of for you: Code:
AddBuffers >NIL: DF0: 15 FailAt 21 Add44k MakeDir RAM:T RAM:ENV Assign >NIL: ENV: RAM:ENV Assign >NIL: T: RAM:T IF NOT EXISTS SYS:Fonts Assign FONTS: EndIF Path >NIL: E: C: SYS:Utilities SYS:Rexxc SYS:System S: SYS:Prefs SYS:WBStartup SYS:Tools SYS:Tools/Commodities IF EXISTS S:User-Startup Execute S:User-Startup EndIF LoadWB AddBuffers >NIL: E: -999 AddBuffers >NIL: DF0: -999 EndCLI >NIL: It won't look pretty, but you should get at least 730+KB of RAM. Also, check your s:user-startup file, you may hav something there that ats RAM up too. |

Hi Akira,
if I want to reduce bitplanes, I *have* to load IPrefs... there's no way out, because IPrefs gives me the error I described before Furthermore, if I load AddxxK (44 or 21 or 36 or whatever) I can't use WB anymore... I bought a CF/IDE adapter, so I will connect another CF internally. This way I will not boot from floppy and I will have more RAM (around 700..800KB). I know this is not a solution, it's a shortcut Have you any ideas why Intuition gives me the error (see previous posts) ?? |

This error, I don't know. Try to see the protection bits of the file screenmode.prefs. set them to 'rwed' My recommendation is to NOT use iPrefs. Looks shittier but works better. Look at my startup-sequence. Try it ! |

Thanks Akira .
In the meantime (following alexh's advice) I got an internal CF/IDE adapter, which I formatted (FFS) and prepared with OS 2.1. Now I'm booting straight from it. If I boot from it with no CF/PCMCIA inserted, I get around 750 KB RAM. But when I insert the external CF (FAT-formatted), memory drops down to 630..640 KB. I suppose it's due to the FAT (or PCMCIA) management. |

Hey my friend,
Find attached the files I use in my A600. execute ADD44k a couple of times and it will reduce to 2 or 1 bitplane. I'll post you my startup sequence later. cheers! |
