getting power to a slimline CD-ROM
*collective groan from EAB troubleshooters* sorry it's me again...
I have a Slimline CD-ROM kit which I plan to put into my A1200 The kit came with an adapter to convert the laptop 50pin connector into a standard 3.5" 40pin IDE connector. This is fine, I have everything I need, IDEfix, ribbon cables etc... but I can't figure out how to get power to the CD-ROM. Instead of a normal big 4pin plug (used for HDDs) or a small 4pin plug (used for FDDs) it has a tiny 2pin female plug Since I already have a power splitter cable in the A1200 (left over from previous owner who installed a big-ass HDD) I thought maybe I could use one of these to hook up the CD power.... what do you think? It's the closest thing I could find |

actually on closer inspection the mystery plug is male, not female...
It looks suspisiously like those power plugs you get on Pentium4 motherboards except it only has 2pins not 4... option number 2: http://store3.yimg.com/I/1010net_1749_45319 |

The difficult way is to:
- Work out which of the two pins on the CD is positive and which is negative; - Get the pin-outs for the power splitter in the Amiga; - Snip off the end of the power splitter; - Solder the correct wires to the CD's pins. |

point taken
seems a bit strange though, selling a slimline CD adapter without a standard power connector... I guess I will have to get a different one instead. |

You'll find that slim-line drives, like those for notebooks, laptops and 1U/2U chassis' are indeed proprietary in their data/power connections.
Normally a single ribbon cable is used to provide both the signal and power to the drive unit Yes, it sounds like the adpater is a little off but you may or may not find anything better. |

fugger..
the connector is an audio plug! and the manufacturers forgot to put in a power plug! There is space on the adapter and solder points for it but it was not put in due to some sort of manufacturing defect Oh well, the kit was very cheap, so I guess I will have to get another adapter sorry for your trouble! |
