Sound Issue with Moonstone WHDLoad version

WinUAE 2.3.3

Whilst playing the WHDLoad version (1.6) of Moonstone using the 1200 Config I have noticed that both the sound FX and Music have a popping sound and a slight crackle during the playback. It tends to happen more when the sounds are first initiated/played and at the end of the playback, it`s certainly audible on the load screen and during in game.

Additional:

Just tried the game using my A600 Config and the sound playback seems fine.

Also tested the same WHDLoad version of the game on my Real A1200 (68030 32MB) and the sound seems fine...

Included the save state taken from the A1200 Config. I should also mention that this save state was taken once the game had started, to hear the pops you must perform some moves with the character.

What was last working version? Does it work if using chip ram only?
(At the moment I am too lazy to test it myself..)

Hi Toni, I have just tested WinUAE versions 2.3.3, 2.3.2, 2.3.1 and 2.3.0 using the same A1200 config and can report that this issue is present. Also I have tried using chip only memory but that doesn't seem to help either. I know it`s not a huge issue but thought it was worth bringing to your attention, perhaps this particular version of WHDLoad is causing issues with emulated hardware?

Additional: Tried running the game using different versions of WHDLoad 16.8, 16.9 and 17 with same issue.

Same here, multiple "p-p-p", one after every sample.
Seems to happen only in Moonstone latest WHD, dunno, checked a few other games and they worked just fine.

No.

EDIT: Tested also this one - Moonstone (1991)(Mindscape)[cr CSL][f AGA LSA] from floppies on a standard A1200 with 2MB Chip config, same thing.

EDIT 2: Tested a few different WinUAE versions, all from 2.3.3 to 2.3.0 seem to glitch here, 2.2.0 sounds the best, still maybe once in a few seconds it does that sound, but it's not as annoying...

Another update on this: Just ran the game again under 1200 quickstart settings (Winuae 2.3.3) , it seems if I set the sound buffer to 1 the sound doesnt pop anymore, although music when played from other games can sound alittle wobbly from time to time.

It probably works using latest beta (when in 68020 CE mode)

It has certainly improved it, that is if I decrease the sound buffer from 4 to 2 or 1.

Hi Shoonay, do you get any improvements if you set your sound buffer at 2 or below?

I don't have any sound problems using latest beta (240b2) but apparently it breaks other programs so there really isn't any good solutions..

Nope, changing the buffer size doesn't make things better at all...
Here's a sample of how it sounds for me during a fight, it is strange, but the intro sounds okay, the "p-p-p" starts with the menu music.

Note that first post includes a whdload statefile = I only tested it and using exact same configuration and it does work now. (pre-2.4 = glitches, 2.4b2 = no glitches)

Use of non-a500 config and disk images: don't even bother, even if it says "AGA fixed". (EDIT: problem being CPU delay loops in audio DMA waits that runs too fast, even if using CE mode 68020. WHDLoad versions hopefully always fix this)

Will this help?
http://download.abime.net/zone/My_co..._Moonstone.uss

I am running the WHD version, and on both, my real amiga's config (030 A1200), and an unexpanded 020 A1200 it does that "p-p-p" sound

From the readme for the WHDLoad patch:
Quote:
executables moved to fast memory and caches disabled by slave to avoid sound replay bugs
So I guess it's not a problem with WinUAE. It just runs too fast so the sound is not replayed correctly.

Ahhhhh..So this can be remedied with changes to the WHDLoad options? Is there a way to stop the executable running from fast memory with WHDLoad?

Yeah, but still, this doesn't happen on older WinUAE *WITH* the newest WHD slave.

The note above is from the latest WHDLoad patch. If cache has been disabled for the sound replay to work properly, the sound replayer is buggy. Thus no WinUAE problem IMHO.

I have just ran the game again on my real A1200 with the identical WHDLoad version and it may seem I was too quick to report back on my initial findings.

The sound crack/pop does start to develop after a short time, I was just holding the joystick with fire button down performing the same move over and over and then it decided to rear its ugly head. Oh and once I killed the other Knight I heard a nasty glut of raw data too. Looking very much like an issue with the WHDLoad patch rather than WinUAE as StingRay suggests.

For now I guess it`s best to run under A600 config...

Tested it on the only older slave version I could find - 1.4, and the sound still glitches on the latest beta and works fine on WinUAE 2.0.1

EDIT: Anyone knows where I could find older versions of the slave to test?

Does http://www.winuae.net/files/b/winuae.zip fix the pop at the end of samples, even when not using CE mode? (Moonstone)

Moonstone sound routine is quite strange and one of WinUAE's "too fast CPU" sound hacks didn't really like the way it worked..
