RTC for Amiga 1200

Welcome
Anybody run this project on the A1200?
https://github.com/screwbreaker/OpenA1200RTC
I wanted to order PCB for this project and I do not know if it is worth it

Looks like a pretty standard RTC module. If you're only planning to build one for yourself, I'd be inclined to save the hassle and buy a ready-made one which will be basically the same thing, and probably cheaper. Of course, then you're missing out on the fun of building your own hardware...

The A1200 was originally designed to have an RTC built in. That circuitry was also designed to be built on a simple add-on module to be sold separately, however neither of those scenarios ended up being built. This project is essentially a clone of that original add-on module, so it should just work as expected.

As an aside - is that Greystones in Co. Wicklow? That's where I grew up

Hi there, I'm the "author" of this
As said in the description, the main goal was to use the same components used for the RTC in other projects, like the Amiga 500 Expansion by PeteAU or the A600 RAM expansion by SukkoPera. If you also plan to have one, or both, this expansions, maybe it will worth a try.

I'm also made another version of the RTC, which hopefully will fit even with the shield, but I haven't tested it yet.

The Amiga Kit Real Time Clock works fine with the clockport on the Amiga 1200 motherboard, ACA1233n and A600 1MB Expansion:

I can guarantee that it is working like a charm on my A1200.
I have few of them around, but I'm still waiting for the feedback.

I don't have an ACA1233N, but don't see why not. It's a very simple RTC module. Just, don't put any RTC on the ACA1233N.
I have an ACA1221EC, and I don't have any issue with it.

It's automatically detected, no software is required.

Really great project

Majinga, can you do another revision please which exactly looks like this from icomp or amigakit ?

The problem is, your design doesn't fit on some ACA accelerator cards and it would be really really great if you can change it to this design. As i see only some parts have to be replaced and the battery holder should be the smaller CR1220. Oh, and please change it to RTC-72423 maybe? If you need the measurements, let me know, i can measure the icomp RTC.

Well, I'm working on another version. My goal is to allow the RTC shield cover to be closed.
This version use the 22 pin connector, but I wanna keep the spirit of the original version, and share as much as possible components with the other free projects.

At the moment I had some issue with the battery holder, it can cause a short with the shield, so I'll end by replacing it, but I want to keep the CR2032, because, they are cheap, easy to find, and they last longer than a CR1220.

But, tell me with which expansion you have an issue, and we see if can be accommodated.

This looks better as the first version. Sure, CR2032 is better and for most versions the perfect solution. Bad to hear that the shield cover can cause a short.

I've never done something with a PCB layout tool, only small corrections on an existing layout with eagle, took me days for some simple things (delete some jumper traces, correct silkscreen and export to gerber). At the moment i'm learning a bit kicad and try to do the version which fits my need, maybe i can work it out with such tiny PCB, i'm progressing with eeschema.

I also think you should stick with that thought. I keep replacing the battery on my Indivision A604 since the CR1210 on there doesn't even last half a year, and that is a bit short in my opinion.

What are the two parts R4+R5 (220R) good for ?

Btw.:
CR1210 = 35mAh
CR2032 = 230mAh (should work 3 years?)

Take a look at "SMD" battery holders - should be much lower profile - with the battery sitting directly on the PCB. Then just throw some insulation over the top of it. Something like this.

Also maybe even ditch the socket for the chip or use an SMD version.
