Manual Mouse/Joystick switch

Yes, I know there are cheap auto-switchers available =)

But I recently was gifted an old manual Datic Mouse/Joystick switcher and I'd rather have it working (if possible).

It's one of these

Anyways, as the page states all it does is switch the GND and +5V lines. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to yield the right results. When playing Alien breed or the likes the game does indeed get the joystick input but somehow it also gets noise from the mouse (even when sitting perfectly still).

In workbench when switching over to mouse mode I can also move the pointer a bit by using the joystick, in joystick mode however I can not move the mouse pointer using the mouse. So it works, but not 100%.

The mouse is a black Amiga mouse (Model no. 327 124), joystick is a regular old Tac-2.

From what I've gathered so far there's no problem with the Datic switch, but I could be wrong. Does anyone have a clue, could it be the mouse itself?

I doubt it since it's a ball mouse, not an optical one =P

Perhaps I should try to convert it into an auto-switching device.

Well, it's because they are ballsy Flipping it on the back removes the contact between the ball and rollers. I did this all the time back in the days. So it shouldn't give any noise while using the joystick. If it still does, then the problem is somewhere else. It is an easy step for narrowing your search for answers.

Well, I had to try so I just did, same results I'm afraid =/

I'm guessing there's some sort of "short" somewhere that causes it not to work by simply switching GND and +5VDC.

I wasn't "there" back in the days when people had these manual switches (did they ever?) so I'm not sure what to expect, maybe a standard manual switch for the miggies switched more lines? =)

Ah, that's too bad It would have been the easiest solution.
But now you know for sure that the problem is electronic.

I wouldn't be fussed if it wasn't a gift, some dude sent me it as a surprise gift after I helped him prepare/install and configure a CF-card with a ClassicWB Lite installation for his stock miggy.

Next best thing is to rebuilt it into an automatic switch. Would probably cost me more than a new one and it's a bit of a shame to gut it, especially since they don't seem to be very common (the Datic ones).

But I guess upgrading it is the most respectful approach ^^
