CDRW/DVD-ROM Drive questions
Hi,
Just bought a new DVD RW drive, and it works with CDs for both reading and writing, but I can't seem to get it to read DVDs. In fact, with a DVD inserted, the system tells me there's no disk inserted Is there a good way to get the drive to read DVDs? Would be nice if I could write them, too. For those who are wondering why I'd bother: I want to make backups on DVD with the drive, and CDs are a little smallish for the amount of stuff I have on my HD, and I don't want to need my peecee for this (needing a peecee for my Amiga is just bad ). The drive is nothing special, just a Samsung 22 speed DVD writer with lightscribe, and it's connected to my A1200's internal IDE port. Any pointers are appreciated |

Are you sure the drive isn't damaged? "No disk in drive" usually is a hardware or firmware issue. Wrong software would say "not a DOS disk".
What kind of DVD did you try? Which software do you use? |

Yes, I'm pretty sure the drive is fine. It works properly with reading and writing CDs, so it should be fine, I suppose. Perhaps I should check it on my peecee.
As for software, I'm simply using IdeFix, so it's probably a driver issue (or that's what you'd think anyway), as I don't think the IdeFix docs even mention DVDs. I tried a normal video DVD, a game DVD (Dungeon Siege expansion) and a rewritable DVD. |

my old dvd drive on my pc was weird, it would only read dvds when set to master with nothing else otherwise it could only read cds. Can't remember the make of drive though.

Update.
It's been a while, but I got back to this today, and fixed two problems:
1) DVDs are read properly as long as they use the ISO format. This means that any DVD I burn now works (listening to Final Fantasy 10 music in 48Khz as I type this) 2) The drive only read a CD/DVD from a cold start. Changing a disk caused it to not work, even after a reset. This has been solved by adding DS=3 to the CD0 mount file in the control field (some diskchange interrupt issue, according to the file system manual). The only thing that remains is DVD burning. I think I'll check out the programs listed in this thread, and thanks to all who took the time to reply Last edited by Thorham; 02 January 2012 at 23:44. |

Actually I have never tried reading a DVD using Amiga. You can easliy use the DVD drive with your Amiga to read CDs but not sure about reading/writing DVDs.

I would like to ask another thing too. If Idefix doesn't show the Dvd drive although it's an Ide/Atapi one, can be another way to use it? I tell because this is what happens with the latest I've bought, in this case in my A1200.

I have merged this thread with an older one which may offer more information on this.
