Hopefully the scoring system makes sense - if it doesn't, please ask Harry

I don't know a lot about this game. It doesn't seem ideal, though, but there doesn't seem to be another way to do it.

I still want to mention, that game end means reaching the stage with the last boss (the wizard after the tower with the rising water), because you would only have 5 seconds to take a picture when you have defeated him, which is probably too short for taking a picture with a camera.

4*100 + 22 + 17*5 = 507

Missed one symbol. There are about 30 extra lives in the game, so there is still room for improvement. The last three stages do not contain symbols.

0 * 100 + 58 = 58

And after several attempts, I finally have some kind of score

402

Great that I finally have a reason to play through this. Thanks for figuring out a scoring system, Harry.

Thats great going John. 402 by the lava stage is very close to what Harry scored for a whole game completion. I didnt think there were so many symbols by that stage. So either Harry didnt get a whole bunch of symbols, and you found places which we didnt, or Harry collected over the quota.

If there are 98 symbols to collect over the rest of the game (after Lava), then the scoring works. But if there are more, then the symbols may stick at 99, or reset to zero and give you an extra continue. This means you'll have to avoid symbols in order to not go over the 99, which I think Harry did, and means he could have collected 522 symbols.

btw, where did you get the dog tags in your screenshot, and what do they do exactly? I found the flashing sword upgrade but it didnt seem to do anything.

Well.. this is my first try... I always wanted to play this game, it's cool that now I have a "valid" reason to do it!

A lot of things to learn, though, and it seems to be a long game so I don't know if I'll be able to complete it by the end of the competition. I'll certainly do my best!

Yes, I didnt know about the 50 extra symbols in Level 1-1. So this is my new score which I think I can not better. Lost only 6 lives in the whole game.

4*100+73+5*27=608

PS: There are not many symbols anymore after the point of John4p's screenshot. The amulet can be retrieved from the hidden cave (entrance is in the lava level) and provides a different ending sequence. The flashing sword upgrades reduce the number of hits an enemy needs. Max sword strength is 4 (the little number on the sword indicates this).

That's from a bonus level in the lava world. Didn't know what it does until I read Harry's post above.
And yes, every sword upgrade means your sword does more damage. Your crouch kicks' damage doesn't get increased which is a nice "realistic" touch.

@Harry: How the hell do I get up here?

Guess I have to make the platform swing by moving left and right in a certain rhythm. But I can't get it down.

To swing a platform, the joystick must be moved in the part of the circle which the platform describes. First, you must hold the fire button and crouch down. If it swings only a little and is on the topleft (kindof) position, you must press down - down+right + right (i do not know exactly if up+right is to be added, all with fire pressed), then repeat to the other side. If it swings much, add down+left at start. There are several platforms throughout the game which can be swung. Mastering this ability is essential to complete the game because there is such a platform in the last but one level (the citadel) which must be swung before the water rises above you.

Works. Thanks a lot! Almost impossible to figure this out on your own in my opinion.

I also tried everything to get the swinging working, with no luck. Its enough to put off the casual player of this game, having got so far.

Thanks Harry.

^ For me swinging works better without the fire button.

Got to the final boss now:

511

Couldn't finish the game though because the boss' second minion jumped over me to the left off-screen and never returned. No way to die for me so I still have to see the ending.

The last world has a couple of surprises. Really great game.

Collected every emblem that I know of. So if Harry is right I've missed 12. Wonder where they are.

Nice, now we all get to finish this together after all these years.

@Harry: Did you figure that mechanism out on your own or did you read about it?
