This is why I usually don't bother with them. Demos are supposed to be smooth, the speed some of them run at even on an 060/66 is totally unacceptable.

Personally I remember that in the old demos the purpose was to make effects in 1 VBL. In the limit 2 VBL but in that case the effect was really to be sensational.
I think that with the arrived of the effects of more and more complex 3D, phong, blur, 3D mapping etc. the meter of the VBL literally jumped

The purpose was to show off, and making stuff 1 VBL was of course one way of doing that, but certainly not the only way

Demoscene needs more smooth running A500 prods. I'm working on it since for me it's the most interesting demo platform and it would be great to see more current-school dezign.

Here's how you can classify your productions:
OFOCS -- One Frame OCS demo
OFOPOCS -- One Frame One Pixel OCS demo
OFOPOKOCS -- One Frame One Pixel One Kilo OCS demo
OSOFOPOKOCS -- Open Source One Frame One Pixel One Kilo OCS demo

(OK. Maybe OFOCS is enough info afterall..)

Ehm, let me quote you:
"And who cares if it's 8x8 or 4x4, as long as it's fast"

Taken from here:
http://pouet.net/prod.php?which=1428

Said in context of ultra low-res effects on the C64, a dark period which is gladly gone.
These demos required you to sit quite far from the screen and in most cases still not being able to figure out what you're watching

But then again, I'm hardly the official spokesperson of the scene

One frame means one video field or one video frame?

This is a great initiative. We also need to categorize single-part demos correctly, and since these are often called "one screeners" we also have the category OSOSOFOPOKOCS - One Screen Open Source One Frame One Pixel One Kilobyte OCS demo.
