Joystick Y-Cable in lieu of switcher?

Hey all, I am broke ATM... so was wondering if a standard DB9 joystick spitter would work to have a mouse and joypad connected to my A1200 on the same port, for 2-player games, or do I really need an auto-switch?

I don't want to risk any damage to my 1200, just curious....

The mouse will block the joystick, thus a real switcher is needed.

When I was a broke teenager, I made my own switcher out of two D9 males, a cassette jewel case and a DPDT switch (and naturally a cable + female D9 for connection to the computer).

The DPDT switch just swapped over gnd and +5 to the port I wanted to use and I left all the other signals connected.

Thanks for the info, Jope!
Hmm, do manual DB9 switchboxes work safely while the Amiga is on?
