No it has a real FPU now, but not all old Vampires can update.
But we are talking about the standalone version and this will come with a full FPU. |

But at the moment no Vampire can install systems that make use of AFA-OS (AfA-WB, AFA-OS, Amikit8, AmikitX)
I think it is also problematic to do this: [ Show youtube player ] |

should already be possible with V4 and Core >2.11
but again: we are talking about the stand alone version here. A 3D-acceleration is already planed for the future: Quote:

Yes the Stand-Alone certainly will do so since it has a real FPU and I hope it is much more powerful than WinUAE otherwise it will not make sense to exist.

That's a ridiculous proposition that anything that doesn't match the price/performance ratio of an x86 machine does not make sense to exist. We get it, you really like UAE and don't understand why people would run real Amiga hardware or this team's thing. We can't explain that to you other than some people like to run real Amigas and some people want to make their own vision of what they think an Amiga should be or should-have-been. You don't want any of that, that's fine. If you feel you dare to discuss the merits or drawbacks of the vampire's as a hardware device, make your own thread. Right this thread is tiresome.
Topic is: Are you looking forward to the vampire 4. Stay on topic or I'm just going to delete your posts, even if it's a response to why someone wants one or doesn't. It's their choice so not really a point worth debating. It's certainly not about WinUAE being better, so give it a rest. Last edited by Ian; 29 January 2019 at 19:38. |

The more I read through this thread the more I look forward to the Vampire 4 as a standalone unit. I didn't really have any desire for a standalone unit until now but the idea of being able to put together a small system that I could just take to the office and plug into HDMI is really very appealing.
And unlike some people, I DO see the advantage of an 080 CPU and RTG graphics even just for playing classic games. It's exactly what I do now on my system that has ECS, 060 and RTG. The Workbench is a pleasure to use in a reasonable 1024x768 but as soon as I want to play a game it drops to PAL and off I go. So if I could come up with a small system, probably around the size of the A600 that I could just stuff in my bag then this would be a winner in all directions for me. Very much looking forward to Vampire 4 hardware, certainly if it gives rise to the future possibility of a pure ASIC design for the "68080" CPU, *that* would be very interesting indeed.
Add-on or Standalone, possibly both depending on pricing. |

I kind of switch opinion if I'd like the standalone more, or (since I got a 1200 two weeks ago which I like a lot) the 1200 version..
Don't forget, you don't need to activate the onboard AGA emulation and can still use the Vamp as only an accelerator and RAM card. Plus some other goodies.. Mean, you still use the Amiga chipset. |

Someone has installed AROS 68k on Vampire V4, what do you think?

Been bitten by the Amiga bug now. Trying to get my hands on an A1200. I sold mine all those years ago
Not sure whether to get one or just get the Vampire 4 stand alone. |

I'm very happy and interested in this combination because the Vampire may be fast enough to run AROS decently while providing a sort of launchpad for AROS for slower 68k systems. If AROS runs well enough on the Vampire, it may find enough interest and get enhanced some more which will make the gap between AmigaOS and AROS narrower with regard to resource efficiency.

Vampire with current price and performance is ok as accelerator for amigas made by commodore.
Standalone it will be not worth of use. There are many better, more compatible and most important open source alternatives. |

MISTer? Nice, I really like it, but sadly not fast at all. And it is not "more compatible". (And please don't say UAE - we are not talking about emulation here - and no: FPGA is not the same as emulation.) |

If there are genuinely other NON-EMULATION alternatives out there than the MISTer and Vampire-4 then please do start a new thread about it. I'd like to hear of them.
But yeah, not here in this thread. |

Some talented person made a custom Vampire case for the V4-stand-alone. I for one like the look a lot. I was more in favour of the accelerator variants of the Vampire because I like the original look and touch of an Amiga but I have to admit that I definitely could fall in love with this one, too...
