Networking Mac Mini to Amiga

Morning all,

Last night I got round to installing the PCMCIA network card I bought from Amikit, into my Amiga.

Installation went like a breeze (thanks to the wonderful documentation Amikit had put together), and with a bit of tinkering I had my Amiga online and downloading WHDLoad installations left, right and centre.

So far, so good.

Now, what I'd like to do next is get my Mac and Amiga networked. They're both connected via a 4-port hub, and I can get my other Mac and Ubuntu box to network without issues. However, I don't even know where to begin when it comes to the Amiga.

Has anyone else on here managed to get their Amiga networked-up? There's a lot of stuff on my Mac that I'd like to transfer over to the Amiga, and I want to do it without burning loads of CDs.

Thanks for any help/suggestions.

You've probably got a few options.

You could FTP from the Ami to your Mac. (FTP may not be switched on by default, so check: System Preferences -> Sharing -> File Sharing -> Options on the Mac) Just grab yourself an FTP client and you're basically good to go.

You could install Samba on the Amiga and create a file share. The Mac will recognise this, allowing you to drag and drop from both sides. I had this up and running a long time ago, and it worked like a charm, but there's a bit of stuff to be done under the hood.

For simplicity I'd ftp stuff about first, then get more permanent shares up and running.

I ended up just using a compactflash kit to be honest, as Amiga file sharing with the Mac seemed a bit of a faff. The other "easy" option is Boot Camp (Windows) and Amiga Explorer.

Thanks for your help, fellas.

After your pointers I found this lovely little Samba guide:

That should keep me busy over the weekend.

That is a good guide - I hear Samba can be a challenge...

For a quick way out I agree with Korruptor - FTP is easier to set up.
I have FileZilla Server set up on my Windows laptop and an Amiga FTP Client set up on my A1200 - it's not blisteringly fast though... for big files you may just be better off going another route like PCMCIA CF Card - not sure what Mac Mini's offer in the way of connectivity...

Peter - what FTP client do you recommend for the Amiga?

I like using AMIFTP - which I found on Aminet

I also use AMFTP - which is on the EAB Server

Both work just as well but AMFTP is a bit more professional looking...

Thanks Peter.

Will try and get things up and running over the weekend, so I can finally get Beetle uploaded

I used AmiFTP, as well. Anything will do, really.

On the samba side, just make sure the Amiga matches to the Mac's defaults and you won't have to configure both sides.

I had them running on a 10/100 ethernet network and the transfer speeds were more than fast enough. Unless you're copying gigs of stuff, it's a nice little setup. Have fun!

Having upgraded to Lion and discovered that the option of connecting via FTP from the sharing preferences is no longer available I thought it was time to update this thread.

The solution showing how to re-enable FTP access on Lion can be found here:

http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7...-in-os-x-lion/

I've just tested it and it works perfectly.
