New notebook for WinUAE .... what features it should have ?

Hi guys

I'm probaly going to buy a new notebook soon

This because Windows 7 will not be supported anymore

So, some questions about the new notebook comes to my mind

For example, what CPU ..... AMD or Intel ?

And again, it's important to have a dedicated graphic card or the integrated one is enough ?

My mainly use of computer will be, as usual, WinUAE

So, i'd like to know what do you think are the features important for the emulator

Should i avoid something in particular ?

From my experience, the notebook i have at the moment is good enough, so i will probably bu a similar model

Any feedback is welcome, thanks

Hi chip,

If you like your currently laptop you could also just buy Windows 10 and install it.

In general I think any new laptop will work great with WinUAE.

Hi madlax

That's another option i have, you are right

But usually "new hardware" goes with "new OS"

Could i be sure Windows 10 recognizes my actual hardware ?

I really don't know

Thanks for your help

If you have the choice, prefer a dedicated gfx. My laptop's best emulation experience is with a dedicated gfx (it come always a situation where the integrated one shows its limits).
Integrated is good for wordprocessor, spreadsheet or presentation application.

For CPU, AMD or Intel it up to you.
You can also consider the AMD CPU if you choose an AMD's brand gfx.

Also you can try to choose laptop that is "compatible" with Amithlon (but this may be harder with actual HW).

More important: how much can it cost? Cheap notebooks suck.

Dedicated GPU isn't very important if only for UAE (and/or no need to run recent games fast enough). Unless you want to use really heavy shader filters or emulators that emulate hardware that do have built-in 3D hardware. IMHO old lowest end dedicated GPUs (that some cheaper notebooks still use) are almost useless vs modern integrated...

Intel is still faster in single threaded tests (and it is noticeable in WinUAE when running Amiga benchmarks with and without JIT) but it isn't important unless you plan to run power hungry non-game software all the time.

Some confusion on the dedicated / integrated gfx issue

To be more clear

In my actual notebook i have the dedicated NVIDIA gfx card

That's the one i use for WinUAE

Is this setting meaningless ?

I use WinUAE in a really normal way, with NO particular display option

It's all leaved as it is at the default

Thanks again

Specs of the old notebook? Old dedicated GPU was probably very useful because old integrated GPUs very quite bad.

That's exactly what my "Acer Aspire 5951G / i5-2410M" laptop purchased in 2011 has; these are the specs

I don't feel the need to upgrade though as it does everything I need well enough, emulation wise i.e:
  • MAME
  • WinUAE
  • SNES
  • FM-Towns
  • Playstation
  • Playstation 2
  • etc...

Hi DamienD

Luckily i found the same model as the previous one, just better !

600 euros but real price is 800

It's an Acer Aspire 5 (exactly the A515-52G-53H4)

This kind of computer never given me problems in the past (this is the third one i own)

At the moment, indeed, all is going well

And done !

The migration to Windows 10 is now complete

I organized the system as the previous one and ALL tools works the same as under Windows 7

Also the DOS command prompt programs work as expected

And i finally finished to backup ALL Amiga Stuff back to the internal HD

I must check only the download / upload speed but i think this is not changed

Anyway the change is gone OK under all aspects

No problem of any sorts indeed
