Haven't played it, can't argue, but I know myself enough to tell you I'd probably be too disgusted to enjoy anything it may have to offer

I'll give you the clue: "respectively"

Slightly off-topic... a colleague gave me his copy of Oblivion as he bought a GOTY version off Steam with all the trimmings. Is it actually worth trying to get into? I've only got relatively limited free time now my little 'un arrived, and in particular practically never get more than an hour continuous time to play (and usually less than that).

It's a lot of fun and can eat up a lot of time but I would try and dedicate a good 4/5 hours into it. After the introduction (barely 30 minutes) you are shown into the full gaming world and all its beauty so should give you an idea whether or not you will enjoy it.

Which is a tad misleading IMO. You can easily roam the world for 10-15 hours and find new stuff, but after that you're left with a rather tedious story catch up thing. If your time is really that limited and you only want to invest an hour each day, I would say that Oblivion might be a tad too 'slow' to enjoy it at that rate. The other option is of course the unwanted expansion of playing time...

Oblivion is an awesome game i have clocked up over 200hrs on it (split between xbox 360 and PS3)

Oblivion swallows your life if you let it!

I did the main quest of Oblivion in roughly 12 hours with the odd sidequest here and there. But as mentioned, you can easily spend 200+ hours in the world of Oblivion.

On-topic: another nice Amiga freeroaming 'game' is 3D construction kit. Only your imagination (and a lot of tedious work) limits it. Castlemaster (and another game I can't recall its title) was made with that...

Sorry to diverge from the original topic again, but there's a strange phenomena I have with both Oblivion (and now Fallout 3) is that although they're pretty huge and can rack up over 100 hours of play to full completion, I actually find they're perfect games if you're short of time too. The actual missions are usually divided into tiny little sections that normally take like 20-30mins (tops) so if you fancy a little burst here and there then they're perfect. Plus you never really get lost as your current mission is always at hand with your radar, map and log book.

Just my two penneth !
