Smile Max's BBS boards

Hi all,

I know that Max's systems didn't have the same cachet with the hardcore scene crowd but they were fun and there were a few lovely Max's boards.

Anyone have any nice memories of particularly good systems? Redrum was run by one Niki Murkett who also updated the Max's software creating Max's Pro then Max's Pro 2. The ansi graphics on that board were something else I remember. Then there was the whole fluffynet thing, a sort of Max's bbs version of fidonet, a nice little community. I suppose that was the difference between the Max's scene and the AmiExpress crowd, Max's bbs's tended to be "nice".

God I loved BBSing, the crunch of the modem, the flashing lights, and the free software. So much so that I was briefy a sysop myself. Sharing my parents phone meant we were only active between 10pm and 6am. That was a lot of fun, activating the node and 10pm, swapping the phone cable with the 28.8k modem, seeing the auto answer light on, and waiting. Mmmmm.

I ran Stingent BBS from 1998-2000 and it used Maxs Pro

Fluffynet I remember, with Dave, flame, loki and others

Them were the days

Actually I have the BBS backed up on a CD somewhere, I might get it up and running for a few screenshots

Yeah you must! Wish I still had my BBS kicking about (Binary Refinery BBS which was then renamed Amibug in its dying days).

eEEEK dOESN'T tEXT lIKE tHIS lOOK wEIRD nOW?

But seriously, used to run a Max's BBS called Magic Mushroom, and then bought Digital Candy until the BBS scene imploded under the internet onslaught...

Used to love the BBS thing, but it's way past it's best now!

Running the maxspro software in winuae and seeing the bbs running brought back some old, old memories..

You know what would be awesome.. if there was a way to browse amiga bbs's using ncomm and winuae (use the net).

If this was possible I'd setup the bbs again for old times sake

There is a nifty BBS documentary that came out last year. Quite comprehensive and done by a real devotee over a period of 3 or 4 years.

Great BBS pics BippyM, would love to have called but don't think I was ever a member of that board. I reckon you might be able to get it back online in WinUAE. If you've got broadband though why not set up a 1200 under your bed, whack in a PCMCIA network card and run a cable to it from your router. Then install telser.device (you can download it from aminet, and thanks to my interest in this a couple of years ago the author has also posted the keyfile on aminet allowing multiple nodes). Then we can all have fun on your board again! The rest of us install DCTelnet, and we can start zmodeming all your lovely files across telnet. Beautiful.

ps someone else asked (someone from Cornwall I think, i'm from Camborne and that's where my bbs was based many moons ago!) where you can get the Max's software...it's on aminet, in it's own Max's folder with lots of lovely doors and things. The great thing about Max's is it's really easy to get going with. You can download Max's Pro 2 extensions but I recommend starting with 1.54 and getting your head around that before moving on to Pro 2.

Cheers,

Dandelion

Those images sure did bring back lots of old memories of dialing BBS.

I used to dig the "last called" line. I think there are some BBS left, you have to telnet to them. I even dialed some but it was just not the same anymore so I never made more than registered once on them.

I know what you mean. Telneting in to boards just doesn't quite feel the same. I think this is in part because you know it's free, plus modem telnet software tends not to be full screen and tends not to support z-modem, an integral part of the BBS experience IMHO. I've been trying to find a BBS which offers dial-up still...can't find any!

If it weren't so expensive to run a BBS (with all the lines to be rented) I'd try and get some hardware together and do ti here.. probably using the A2000, which is currrently being used as a CDTV stand xD heh ^_^;;

I ran the Silicon Jungle here in the states with Skyline BBS on my Amiga 2000 during the LATE 1980's, quite a switch from C-Net 12.0 / New Image on my C64 with a Lt.Kernel 85MB. Upgraded the Ami with a refurbished 9600 baud direct from USRobitics. Cost $611 for the refurb, down from the $911 retail!!

I'd go back in a heart beat!! Commodore was still kickin' for 3 more years. *HUGE grin*

I think the problem is getting ZModem working with Telnet... I had a quick look for a Free (or cheap) Telnet client that supports ZModem and found none.... now HSModem or Hydra-Link.. no chance....

I've been mulling over putting back a BBS backup I have on CD online but without full functionality whats the point?
