C64 mini

Some months ago I have heard about a C64 mini.
As many of "old"* C= user, my attention has been drawn to the stuff.
Since then it seem that the official site is in deep hibernation.
Did someone have any news about it ?

*everything is relative

Yes, it's about to go on sale (I guess on pre-order almost everywhere) and you can find some initial reviews on Youtube.

I also saw an ad with it from our local electronics-chain and they expect to have it by 27th March:
https://www.elgiganten.dk/product/ga...64-mini-konsol
The price of 699 DKK is ~94€ (including tax).

Pre-Ordered mine yesterday, nice little addition to have on my pc desk.
The keys are only for show though, you have to plug in a usb keyboard. It does allow you to load more games from usb stick though and the gui is lovely.

So Kitty, you can now be the judge of the following. Is it the Breadbin that contains the logic or the Joystick. Rumors say, all logic is in the joystick, i.e. just a rerelease of the older Commodore 64DTV https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commodore_64_DTV and the breadbin simply acts as a HDMI adapter and USB hub.

Could you try with the breadbin and a different USB joystick instead of the one it came with?

Oooh teardown please! I read somehere (unverified) that it is just a C64DTV Joystick and the mini itself is just use as a breakout for USB and HDMI.

Can anyone verify please?

EDIT: lol spudje beat me to it

Isn`t it a bit light for a C64? looks like the colour of a C16 or plus4.

It has no functionally keyboard, so crap. The full version with keyboard will follow later. Still crap. Indeed only a toy for nostalgia feelings. Due to license problems a lot of games are missing. The "Joystick" doesn't look like quality.

It is also a good entry point for new generations.

Plug it on the TV and let the children play.

So question @kitty, is it worth the buy ?

I can understand why someone would want to buy a product that they can just hook up to the TV, power on and start playing without hassle. But I don't get the point of putting a fake keyboard on it.

That joystick looks a lot like a C64DTV so a teardown would indeed be very interesting. The DTV was a proper ASIC design and a modern version of that with HDMI output would be nice. Then if the joystick is lousy, one could just pull out the board inside to get to the C64 which can hopefully be modded as much as a real C64DTV.

What i would like to see is a high quality FPGA like the Super NT in a proper case with keyboard. A new Amiga with all legacy ports but modern ports too, like HDMI and USB. Well, Amiga Reloaded from icomp. Maybe.

I only recently heard about it, are you thinking at something like the 2012 "amiga mini" from C= USA ? link (french)

The icomp.de site is impossible to browse (big menu on top, big picture at the bottom, so interesting middle part is so small that it's useless on my laptop screen...)

No, a keyboard Amiga like the A1200 or A500. The reloaded is planned as an A1200 similar computer in an A500 case. A hybrid of real chips and FPGA.

Full compatibility to the old software is mandatory. I don't care about the useless nextgen Amiga stuff.

That link shows a regular PC with an Amiga logo on the front, so there's not much Amiga about it, not even so-called 'next-gen' Amiga.. Although it can probably run WinUAE just like all other PCs.

Well i guess this was for price reasons, as someone said a full version with working keyboard is coming.

So would i, but general consumers wouldnt pay the amount this would cost, only software emulation via an ARM chip would be cheap enough to sell, but i guess this will never happen with the sad state of the Amigas IPs.

I will happen one day, but not for the mass market like this toys. 300-350 Euro maybe for such an Amiga like the reloaded. If not icomp then somebody else will build it. Just like the SpectrumNext or the Ultimate 64.
