What can i say!. after spending 10 years with Amiga Workbench from 1990 till 2000 and using Windows at work for my IT job in the mid 90's till 2000 and buying Windows PC and using for personal use from 2000 till 4 months ago this year, and picking up Suse Linux 10.2 and giving it a thorough workout, i have come to one conclusion.

AMIGA WINS !!!!.... There is just too much about Linux that frustrates the shit out of me as did Windows, but never did i feel that running my A1200 and doing all sorts of things with it. Sure, in todays world, you can do many more things with latest OS's, but at least the Amiga didnt take so long to damn boot!!.. One thing that suprised me about Suse was the boot time!!!!!????? amongst other things, but i will still stick with Linux over Windows until i one day become a Linux superuser and have no problems at all ( seems i have no choice ) .

And no, i dont mind playing around with the Linux shell, i love the fact that i can, but make one small mistake in Linux and you need a science degree to get it back or its time for "another" reinstall until you know exactly what youve done wrong time and time again.

Linux is the Rick Dangerous of OS's. You cant avoid the danger till it happens, then once you know its easier, but it means starting the thing "all over AGAIN !!!!!"

I have exactly the same feelings as I tried Ubuntu which should be easy.
CD-ROM quit working during installation,
gfx had only svga resolution available
- took one night to figure out how to shut X and add screenmodes,
sfx card did not get working.

Besides all that I still have no music making tools..

My conclusion:
I will give Amiga another try. Will use it for anything possible with it.
I'll have a Wintel machine for making serious audio production.
And a Laptop for Internet browsing.
One day, I'll move the audio production to Mac, when I have some more bucks.

thats why its so important that amiga.com gets their act togheter with hyperion and a good hardware manufacturer, and set amiga back onto the world...amiga deserves a decent change to get back on top...good design always win..and try to hire some old commodore technicans like dave haynie....

Yes, it's surprising (and sad, actually) that the old Amiga Workbench still has many advantages over other "modern" operating systems. See my list of Amiga Advantages (... and I need to update the list because I've found many more). Even the supposedly glorious OSX has some annoying "features" and limitations compared to Amiga.

The most tragic thing of all is that operating systems will probably get worse, not better. Many of the things I wish they'd change will never change because that's they way they've done them for years and the method has now become "standard procedure". They just build more and more features which operate in the same annoying way.

It's like hot-rodding an ugly, crap car. It doesn't matter how many body mouldings, fins, layers of paint or fuzzy dice they add, it's still an ugly piece of shit.

I tend to agree with the OP. Linux/BSD I use for messing about with servers, etc, but it's just not a great everyday system, Windows, while usable for everyday tasks, I'm sure we're all aware of it's numerous faults. But the big thing 3.x lacks is a decent browser.

If I could just use Betfair, Yuku, etc, on my Amiga I'd happily use it every day of the week. I can work on it, play Media, chat online, play quick and simple games, whatever, but the lack of a decent browser in such an Internet-centric world really holds it back. I just wish I had the knowledge to throw a port together.

This is why the reluctance to allow the port of 4.0 on the Mac-Mini is so disappointing for me. Give people widely available and pretty up-to-date hardware and we'd see a workable system for the first time in a decade.

But I guess the only hope now is AROS

The only reason the Amiga is so much easier is that there's not much to learn regarding the day-to-day usage of the OS.

Unix is also straightforward and easy but there's more to learn.

FWIW: I agree with much of the sentiment above.

Slightly different perspective though:
-For all it's good points I still despise Linux & despite installing many-many distro's over the years it still can't find a perminant place on any of my systems. Mostly for reasons well put above.
-XP is a good OS! No really, I'm neither joking nor insane. ( probably ) There's plenty I don't like about the way it does things but that's just my personal preferences @ work. The real problem is all the useless cr*p M$ have loaded it with. My suggestion? Get a copy of nLite, cut all to fat from it, burn a new install CD & give it another go... You'll be very suprised - XP can really fly! ( Well, flutter about a bit )
-AmigaOS will allways be my favorite. I can't see it ever being remotely main-stream again, but on a good system is still suprisingly useful, as well as pleasent to use.

Quick plug: after a long converation with another forum member it was obvious I had forgotten what a pig Amithlon is to install. ( The most conventient way to modern/powerful classic OS use ) So I'm writing an 'install guide'.
I'll post the link when nearly done - give it a go, after a few days of tearing your hair out you'll be suprised what our favorite OS can do with a bit of grunt behind it.

after my wintendo break discovering linux was like getting an amiga again, finaly in charge again.
most binary distros seemed to be a mess back then tho, but distros like linuxfromscratch or gentoo give you exactly what you want.

my favorite wm at the moment is E17, still cvs but coming along pretty nice.
