Classic WB 68k install on an A600 without using winuae. Possible?
Does anyone know how to do this without Winuae? The reason I ask is I was advised to get a different kind of HDD for my A600. A Kingspec 44PIN IDE PATA MLC 4GB DOM SSD Disk On Module. Even though I was told this was more reliable than the CF Flash cards more commonly used I see no way of connecting it to a PC. Well not with any adapters that I own. So, I need to find a way of getting classic wb 68k on their without winuae. Anyone know how? Can I use the pcmcia slot?
Thanx |

Something like this?
It's standard 44pin female conector, main problem is that it has female connector instead of male that standard 2.5'' HDD's have. I guess it's meant to be plugged in IDE controller port directly, not via cable. That only complicates it a bit, you need something to change it's "gender" to male and then you can use what ever supports 2.5 IDE HDDs. Something like this or this will do the trick. Once you have male connectors you can connect it to some IDE to USB adapter that has 44 pin connector, let's say something like this or standard 2.5'' IDE HDD enclosure. Then you just plug this IDE to USB adapter to PC USB port. If you have desktop PC that has IDE connectors on motherboard (not likely if it's newer than, let's say, 2-3 years) you can use this 44pin to 40pin IDE adapter and connect it to standard 3.5'' IDE cable. But I think USB options are easier. In the end it all comes down to "changing" it's gender to male so you can use some of these standard methods for connecting 2.5'' IDE devices to PC. Personally, I think I would still go with CF, it's simpler and I don't think it's more susceptible to potential filesystem corruption than this IDE DOM thingy. I would guess it's only rated for more flash memory (re)write cycles than CF card which shouldn't be a problem in real life usage. Last edited by Solo761; 11 October 2013 at 09:28. |

I got one of those KingSpec PATA DOM modules (16GB) and while it works fine on the PC using a gender changer and adapter board, the A1200 refuses to talk with it. I am not sure why since it seem that some other people have gotten them to work.
I just get a constant HDD light and it doesn't detect any drive as being connected. |

Interesting, the bit about HDD light. I have 16GB CF in my A1200 and while it works fine, HDD light doesn't, go figure.

There are several ways, but you can compress your CWB System on WinUAE with dopus -Lzx for example-, save it to the Cf you use with the Pcmcia, you install OS3.1 on the miggy adding dopus and just extract the files over your System. Not sure, but perhaps (better) you will have first to unprotect your DH0 (protect dh0:#? +wd all).

I upgraded to ClassicWB v28 on my A1200 using the install disk I modified to use CF0 instead of DH0.
First I booted my modified CWB install disk using HDInstTools 16.9 and PFS3-AIO and formatted DH0. Then I prepared & customized ClassicWB to my needs in WinUAE and LhA'ed the entire DH0 partition as System.lha, then booted the install disk from DF0 with the CF card inserted in the PCMCIA slot and everything went automatically from there. |

I'm going to go with installing CWB68k on winuae and then transferring with Pcmcia later. Trying to prepare Winuae now for A600 with HD config but it won't accept the 3.1 A600 KS.
This one: Kickstart v3.1 rev 40.63 (1993)(Commodore)(A500-A600-A2000).rom Everytime I've tried winuae fails to boot. It only boots with the 2.0 KS. I remember Toni Wilen telling me that this was a bad custom rom or something but I've tried the same rom from different sources and still get the same result. Winuae log attached. I imagine if I install CWB in winuae under 2.0 ks roms it wont like my real A600 with its 3.1 roms. Thanks |

You're using the wrong kick rom.
This is the one you have: Code:
Name: Kickstart v3.1 r40.68 (1993)(Commodore)(beta)[h][for use with ReKick].rom Size: 524288 CRC32: 88136ca9 MD5: 0b839c665635a249c5736118c68a69a7 SHA1: 9631ec3bcc6bbbd727d774f85b6525a2fa3d82bc |
