hi guys, im Hernan AKA ELPILOTO as you can see :P
I saw lot of mods, really nice, im not going to say this hack is better than that or something like that, just that i did what i did because i had a particular need, but i think that its an intresting hack, because you dont have to find a particular drive, or use an old drive ( i dont like to put in risk my disks in a drive with a fulty head) you dont need electronic skills, is pretty easy.....its totally true that if you want to use a second drive (or more) youll have to use an other pc modified drive, an amiga drive will not work, but i preffer to use new drives, in fact, i dont use amiga drives any more since 11 years. Almost all Amigas fans here in Argentina use, at least, one of this modified pc drives, so dont worry, it works pretty well if you want to see some pics and info about the hack, here is a link to my personal blog http://elpilotohernan.wordpress.com/...tera-de-amiga/ cheers elpiloto |

I've just successfully modded a Mitsumi / Newtronics D359T5.
This drive may have been done before but I made a diagram anyway in case it helps anyone: Nice drive - quiet mechanism. Here it is booting Arte! |

yep, afaik they are connected with a thin line one the PCB, R29 with J1 and P2 (although the last one is rather hard to spot due to the white ink of J10 hiding the trace to P2)

follow the other side of j1, I suppose go to DC.
if ok, solder a wire instead of a r29 and instead of j1 |

Does anyone know why these work fine as a normal internal drive (and external for the most part) but mis-behave with hardware such as the super Ami or Cyclone dongle?

What I understand is that every PC drive can potentially be modified for amiga compatibility through the following remapping:
-Redirect /DCD to pin 2 so the Amiga can see it at the right place -Configure drive to respond as DS0 (because every PC drive is configured as B or DS1) -Find /RDY signal on the PCB and connect it to pin 34 which is now free because /DCD was disonnected from pin 34. The main difficulty is to find the /RDY signal because it is not connected to the floppy connector, and every drive has a different PCB implementation. |

1/ I remember it was written somewhere that some "recent" PC drives have open collector outputs. So 2K2 pullups had to be added on these signals (concerns only the signals generated by the drive like /INDEX for example) to have it work properly on the Amiga
Is it right? 2/ The /RDY can be generated from the /SEL, /MTR0 and /INDEX signals. The condition to fullfill is: Drive should be selected, motor on and 2 pulses occured on /INDEX. So if /RDY is not available on PCB, it should be artificially generated through external logic. |

1) but how would they work in PC then?
2) have you checked out this thread: http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=39042 it deals more with such information than this one. |
