Unhappy Can someone post a working Winuae 3.4 configuration to run OS41.FE Classic?

Dear all,

I have to once again admit defeat.

I have spent far too much time trying to get winuae to work with OS 4.1FE Classic - I have followed countless tutorials, watched Youtube videos - often in Polish - and the closest I got was having my OS4 hd be mountable and readable but not bootable - even though HD toolbox says it is.

Most of the time though, I generate crash dumps.

Can someone post a working configuration for WINUAE3.4, or point me at one. I have just watched a vid for WinUAE3.something else and it's totally different (and in Polish).

Any help will be gratefully received.

Sounds like missing m68k filesystem in RDB. Standard ROM FFS does not support DOS\7.

Crashes probably are caused by too weird config and/or m68k JIT being enabled (which is useless).

Hello Toni,

I must admit it's rather nice to have the apps dev reply thank you.

This is a config that crashes, I confess I honestly don't know what I have done wrong

I had to change all the /0 chars (nulls) to the word nul to get it to paste.

Crash is caused by a a bug, apparently you had configured some manual Z2 fast previously, then disabled it by setting size to zero, but mapping code didn't check for size, only if manual address pair was configured.. Configured space then shadowed KS ROM and more..

Workaround: Select Z2 Fast Ram #1 in Advanced memory settings, set some size (anything else than "none"), then untick Manual configuration, put size back to none.

It is also recommended to use CSPPC SCSI instead of mainboard IDE (CSPPC SCSI is much faster in emulation because it is DMA controller, DMA emulation is fast)

You can also enable UAE Boot ROM but it must be set to 128k indirect mode, this enables directory harddrives and other UAE expansions.

Hi Toni,

Many thanks for the reply, your workaround fixed the crash and I now have both the cd and hd on the csppc scsi.

Unfortunately I still don't have a successful boot. Winuae spins the floppy from track 40 to 00 and back to 39 where everything just stops. It's not a crash, and I don't get a guru its like its waiting for something.

In the past I've had a requester pop up asking for the OS4.1FE cd to be inserted but here nothing.

Any ideas?

Hi Chocsplease,

You don't need to use the ADF (Disk) for OS 4.1 FE Classic.. Only the CD (image) unless you're using a real Amiga, perhaps. I "ripped" my image to Hard Drive and it works well. Do these steps:

CSPPC should be your processor, as it is mine to mimic my A4000. When you first power on WinUAE press the ESCape key almost the moment you let go of that click. This will cause the CSPPC Menu to display. It's easy to miss. In the SCSI section, in Unit 0 (most common), double click that line. Screen will change, look for the "No CDRom Mount" near the bottom. Click it twice. Now it'll be set for "CDRom Boot". Click Use, then Return, and now Save.
Do that AFTER you've done this: In the Hardware part find "CD & Hard Drives". Now make an "Optical Drive". Clock on "Add SCSI/IDE CD Drive". Change HD Controller to CyberStormPPC. Use "0". Click "Add CD Drive".
At the bottom, select "Select image file". Find your ISO or CUE file. Or use the button to the right of it and pick your Optical Drive.

Since you used the advice from Toni then I'm sure you now also have the ROM set. So, click Start and it should at least boot from the CD. That'll get it all started. Remember to go back to the CSPPC's menu and disable booting when you don't want it to do that anymore and change it back to what it was when you first accessed that menu. :-)

Better put the CD in unit 1. You really want to use CSPPC SCSI for HD too.

I had troubles with the virtual hard disk being unit 0. During the installation boot if the hard disk was 0 then you'd get a Workbench requester saying it was non-DOS or so. No way to cancel the requester so you're stuck. If the CD is unit 0 then it boots from that before it looks at the hard disk and all is good. Post install of Amiga OS4.1FE I changed the hard disk to unit 0 then, after everything is installed and DOS-ified.

Maybe I was doing it wrong but that worked for me.

That shouldn't happen unless HDF was pre-partitioned but not formatted (or RDB mode was not enabled)

That is the problem, on initial boot I'd partition the drive in the OS4.1 tools, then on the next boot it is still unformatted and you then format it just before the OS4.1 installer installs it. I don't know if I was doing it right but making the virtual hard disk unit 1 and the CD unit 0 allowed me to successfully install OS4.1. Post install I then set the hard disk as unit 0 because it was then formatted. Perhaps that isn't the "correct" way to do it but it worked for me.

Many thanks for all the replies.

I have installed OS4.1FE Classic by using the method suggested by headkase & AC/DC Hacker.

Unfortunately when the Amiga boots onto the hdf I get an instant software failure of 8000 0008. Has anyone had this before?

Strangely if I look in the winuae screens at cd and hard drives, there is a question mark next to the hdf file in the column that has the * as a heading. No idea what that means. The HDF is 3 gb in size and is set to use the smart file system. Also I can't select the UAE rom, the option on the ROM screen is greyed out.

Headkase, could you post your working winuae config? You can usually find them in

C:\Users\Public\Documents\Amiga Files\WinUAE\Configurations\

and they are fairly short text files. All I would have to do to use it is change a few paths.

Currently I am stuck again.

Many thanks in advance.

Still sounds like missing/wrong m68k filesystem.

Read Classic_FAQ(.pdf) very carefully. (Located on OS4.1 install CD root)

Hi Toni,

Thank you for pointing me to that doc, I've read and tried again... Looks like you are right - but I don't understand why, or how to fix.

This is a picture of the steps I took to try and install the hdf. I've numbered them in yellow. The last, 14 is where things go pear shaped.

However when I retry updating the status changes to modified!

This is an image (1st left to right) of the partition and fs. The FS has gone!

Why? I saved it in image 8 above and saved all the changes to the disk!

I am stumped

I noticed your config has physical HD block size set to 1024. It must be always 512. (It has nothing to do with filesystem logical block size)

I have attached my config. Hope this will help.

Also, there are install guides here on eab - I think you can search and find some really good ones here - I wrote one for AmigaForever and you might be able to use the HD setup procedure for WinUAE. Not sure though.

I'll look for it and post the link

Many thanks for the replies and the config.

I am pleased to say that I now have a working OS4.1FE install under WINUAE and have been able to install update 1.

Just playing around with the workbench, I am surprised how quickly things run, my PC is in no way cutting edge - a 64bit AMD Phenom 955 - yet booting and loading apps is surprisingly quick.

Congrats to all concerned!
