Phillips CM8833 MKII

Hi,

I had an A600 some time ago with one of these monitors. Like most things It was thrown out when i moved house some time ago.(Am i gutted!)

Anyway, apart from Ebay, does anyone know where I can get one of these monitors from again? Or should I just buy a cheap 14" TV?

I use one of these as a TV in my front room (at least until i get a proper TV). You might as well just buy a new TV as the monitor is going to be at least around a decade old and they don't last forever. Unless of course you want it to fit into your Amiga set-up.

I wouldn't buy a TV instead !
The Philips is very sharp and has a nice shining picture. It as sharp as a C= 1084S but colours don't look as pale.
I have heard that many people who work a lot with video still use these old monitors.

Well compared to the video from a RF lead the monitor is obviously superior. I was assuming RetroRevival was going to use a scart cable or similar. I wouldn't use the RF cable if you want a decent picture!

I have both the Phillips and the 1084ST and the Phillips wins by a country mile, a far superior picture IMHO.

The intension was to use it for a whole manner of purposes, including an Amiga, ST, and a few consoles.

Shame they go for just as much as a 14" TV does.

If memory serves me right you cn get an expansion modular for the Phillips monitor that allows you to receive TV signals. Has anyone seen this?

yup, I saw that around 1990, but it costed half the price of the actual monitor it had to connect to!

Yes, I recalled that you could buy a TV for the same price, porbably why the no one ever bought it. Still, it must be a rarity now.

I have a 1084S and previously had a CM8833 and must say that the picture is MUCH better on my Grunding TV (54cm diagonal) using SCART lead than on any of those monitors. Better colours and even the sharpness is better. When playing games I normally take the Amiga to the TV and play there...

Had both the Philips and the Commodore 1084. The Commodore is way better because it doesn't have the ugly raster the the Philips has, covering the pixels. If "sharp" was "best" Amiga graphics would look best on my Dell 19" Trinitron, but they don't.

well I have to disagree. I've had all sorts (video, analogue and digital sat, terrestrial etc) plugged into TVs through SCART and into my various monitors (CM8833 I & II, HCS36 etc) and always think the picture looks better on the monitors - even when it's taking in composite! But thats just IMHO....

Who would buy such a thing though. It's much cheaper to hook it up to an old VCR (doesn't even have to be a fully working one). If it has a remote control, even better.

Still, it sounds like a cool add-on! I'd like to know what it looks like.
