CR2032 Batteries for SNES - Where to buy in UK?
Simple enough to find these Batteries on-line but these are to replace dead CR2032 Batteries in SNES Carts and they are pre-mounted - thin leg one end and a thicker, slightly more square leg the other if you know what I mean... it has to be exactly this type of mount otherwise the cart wont fit back together.
See Picture 1 There are CR2032 Batteries everywhere on ebay but I cant find the mounted type that look to fit the SNES carts for game save purposes. I see Amigakit stock one but I don't know if it looks the same type of fitting. Just wanted to ask if anyone knows where to buy them in the UK (Cheap) I de-soldered the one pictured here thinking I could walk into Maplins today and buy one of the shelf - no such luck! Picture 2 Any information or links would be most welcome as some of my SNES carts are now not saving games! |

If you can't find the right fitting, why not just get the standard batteries and solder wires from the battery to the PCB?

Hi Peter,
Yes, do as Smiley says and solder wires to a standard battery. You can get these anywhere (WH Smith, for instance). prowler |

I would be a bit worried soldering directly onto the battery - wouldn't that be a bit... dangerous...?
I guess I will have to do it if I cant find the correct mounts.. |

The question should be where cant you buy a CR2032.
Every supermarket, every DIY store, every computer shop The attachements are just soldered on, 2 seconds and a soldering iron. |

The battery casing is a fairly large area of metal to solder to, so will act as a pretty good heat sink. I should think it would be almost impossible to get it hot enough to be dangerous, unless you have the type of soldering iron you heat in a forge.

Thanks guys... I sort of knew that the CR2032 was easy to get hold of - I was just hoping that someone may have replaced their SNES cart batteries and knew of a UK supplier that had mounted CR2032's for sale specifically for this purpose...
I could use wires but I would think the mounted type would be a neater job - guess I am being a bit fussy...! |

Get some thin metal or thick wire and make the 2 little do-hickeys yourself. Does the neatness really matter if its surrounded by a plastic case?

The alternative is to buy quick release CR2032 PCB battery holder from Maplin, RS or Farnell.
Hunt around and you should be able to find a form factor which fits the cart's PCB. Last edited by alexh; 07 June 2009 at 11:05. |

Funny you should mention these Alex - I have been looking at this type this morning - these would be perfect so long as I can get a size which allows the case to shut as you say - I will have to try a couple out - I will post back here with results just in case anyone else has the need to do the same to their SNES carts...
Cheers for the ideas guys... |

Here are the CR2032 we sell (including tagged PCB type and holders):

Not really.
Amigakit - CR2032 - 2.92 for 1 (plus shipping) Ebay UK - CR2032 - 2.85 for 10 (free shipping) Guess the PCB mount and sockets are not too badly priced. Although Maplins (notorious for being a rip off) is priced lower. Also.. Apparently you can actually break off the terminals on the dead battery and solder them onto your new one. These CR 2032 batteries are used in a lot of diabetic glucose monitors, so most chemists will stock them.

With a bit of effort I have managed to remove the solder mounts from the original SNES battery so I am going to solder the original mounts onto a new battery and solder it back onto the game cart board... I will post results here as to how I get on - should be pretty simple...
Thank you Amigakit for the information however I don't think that any of the battery holders shown so far are going to fit, there is so little space when the cart is closed shut... I did find this place on line http://www.consolegoods.co.uk/ they stock a battery that comes pre soldered with what looks to be the correct mounts - the Amigakit CR2032 mounted battery would need to be altered to fit the SNES board and casing. |

Any attempt of soldering anything to CR2032 battery will destroy its internal chemistry. When the battery is exposed to a temperature exceeding permissible limit its internal current leakage will increase permanently. The battery will start to die slowly, probably within two week time it will be gone.
The original PCB mounts are welded. Not every welding machine will be suitable to do this (the current impulse and its timing must be very precise). We talked to many battery shops making battery packs for power tools and RC models asking them for attaching mounting brackets to a CR2020 battery (it's a thinner version of CR2032 battery: 2mm thick instead of 3.2mm). All of them refused claiming they can't guarantee the reliability. My advice: buy a battery with factory mounted brackets or use standard battery with battery holder socket (if space permits). Another solution is to use conducting glue but it's rather expensive. Take a look at Farnell. Shipping costs will be higher than a single battery. |
