Weird vertical lines (c64)

First off, this is a c64 problem ( sorry, I can not after lots of tries & e.mails to Kim lemon, register on Lemon 64 forums !! )
Anyways, I`m sure a lot of you guys have C64`s so you may be able to help.

I have three c64,s two newer C64C`s and a manky old Beadbin. Problem is when I use the C64C ( Both of them ) I get faint vertical lines down the screen, not to bad but noticeable.

With the old breadbin, the screen is perfect, crystal clear.

I am using an RGB scart cable to a 32" CRT TV.

Cheers !

Just a thought, are the C64Cs native to your country? I know there were some display issues between US and other countries with the GFX chip because of 50/60Hz display differences.

You use a SCART composite video cable, the C64 has no RGB output.

For the C64c vertical lines: That's sadly normal, the VIC-II chip causes this annoying issue. All you could try is to use a S-Video cable, this "should" improve the image quality for the C64c and newer models.

Sounds similar to the NeoGeo RGB problem. Do the lines look like the first screenshot on this page: http://www.mmmonkey.co.uk/console/neo/video.htm

Yep, something like this. The C64c composite out on TV set is awful. Maybe some old monitors give you better results. Anyway, you could also try an S-Video cable. It probably depends on the used cable and TV set if you get a better image or not. Protovision has some quality cables from Doc of Desire:

Like said, the vertical banding is a problem of the newer VIC-IIs. The VIC-IIe in C-128s shows it quite badly.

Part of the design, nothing you can do.

PS. Always prefer s-video when connecting the C-64 to a display. :-)

Yeah the lines are as shown in the pic, crazy that a problem occured in a so called improved C64 !
Think i`ll stick with using the old breadbin, the picture is really superb.
Not sure really exactly what my cable is, all I know is that it was from a seller on ebay and seems pretty well made with quality cable - C64 video to scart.

Is it possible to swap the mainboard out of a breadbin into a c64c so getting good picture and nicer keyboard ?

Sorta. The keyboard mounting brackets might not be compatible with the old motherboard.. You'll have to use your imagination when modifying them.

I had issues with a lousy display. A lot of the cables that are out for the C64 don't seem to be shielded all that well or are old so i decided to mod my C64. so i can use regular composite cables for both audio and video.

Heres a pic. (the cable coming out of the back is just a test cable). The Yellow and white RCA jacks are the A/V outputs.

Apparently it can be fixed just take a look at this.

Sadly I can't find the schematic to build it as I would love to do this fix on my C64c.
