Hi there!
I've just uploaded in https://ftp2.grandis.nu/turran/FTP/~...s/jurassicman/ the dumps of the Italian Version of "The Neverending Story II (La storia Infinita 2)".

The disk seems to work perfectly and I installed it with WHDLoad without any errors so hopefully it is good.

Enjoy!

Disk looks unmodified but needs cleaning on side 1, KF dump shows tracks 58+ look dirty in HxC.

I'm sure Denis will give a better report on the dump!

Ok, thanks for the feedback.

I'll gently clean it with some IPA... I had no problems installing it with WHDLoad, though, so I thought it didn't need to be cleaned (I just used compressed air to clean any dust as I always do).

I'll upload new dumps as soon as possible.

It's identical to this TOSEC adf once converted to adf.
Code:
Name:	Storia Infinita II, La (1992)(Linel)(IT).adf
Size:	901120
CRC32:	3da8514f
MD5:	a52c01c71ccb62c67241de5604667db7

dtc is bit more sensitive and finds track 79.1 sector 0 as bad when creating an ADF, HxC will export the KF dump to ADF with same CRC as TOSEC!

Unfortunately I've a bad news...
I visually inspected the disk and there was actually quite some dirt.

I used a cotton pad with some IPA but by removing the dirt I made the disk unreadable.

Now when I try to install it with WHDLoad I get a "Bad Checksum Error".

I've upload anyway the new dump... maybe you can find something useful but the disk doesn't work anymore and it also made some bad noises when making the .scp file.

Looks like the floppy heads need cleaning too, scraping usually means the heads are dirty so need cleaning. Sounds like the dirt has built up on the heads and scored/damaged the disk as HxC now shows lots of bad tracks Clean the floppy heads and disk then try again, but if you hear ANY scraping/squealing noise when dumping eject the disk straight away and check/clean the disk/heads and try again!!

On the plus side, there were 2 tracks that were better dumps than your first so copied them over the first dump and track 79.1 is now OK in dtc when creating an ADF and the CRC now matches the TOSEC ADF!

Thanks for the hints, mate.
The noise made by the drive when making the .scp file was bad but nothing so alarming...

From my personal experience it can happen that a disk becomes unreadable after cleaning it... sometimes the dirt is like a little "coat" on the surface and by removing it you actually "peel" the magnetic disk.

I've tried to install the game with WHDLoad using 3 different floppy drives so I'm pretty sure that the disk is definitely bad...

I'll soon clean the heads of the drives for sure (I do it regularly) but I've just used them to read and write other floppies without any issues...

Hopefully it is still possible to make a working ipf file from the first dump.

Good to know you clean the floppy heads, when dumping disks regular head cleaning is needed! It could be the IPA is too strong, do you dilute it or use it neat? I use Whiteboard Cleaner in a 250ml spray bottle and spray a bit onto a cotton bud, it seems gentler on the disk surface than pure IPA!

@JurassicMan : you are lucky.....

I used the first dump, seen that track 79.1 was bad, and then picked T79.1 from your second faulty dump, and now i have a fully good dump and an IPF. You will be able to restore your disk. i put the link for the archive 100% good.

In order to clean safely, use a floppy cleaner, a drop per drop flask (you can buy those online, it's used for essential oils). Put 70% alcohol in it, then apply 2 drops on the disk surface, then turn the button given with the floppy cleaner, do both sides of the disk, ensure that the alcohol has dried, then try again after 10 minutes to read the disk. The result will be not only much better, it will also avoid the awful noise (sqweakkkk) when reading, indicating that the disk has either bitrot or mould on the surface.

Precision (not for ears!) cotton bud must only be used in specific cases :
when you see with the floppy cleaner a big spot of mould that you want to molten with alcohol, gradually removing it (it takes patience and time!).

Thank you Denis I've also put the IPF and the raw files on the file server.

This is cool!
Thanks so much. I'm happy that at the end we have a full working ipf file.

I'll read better your instructions about the cleaning (I'm at work now) and I'll try to use your hints...

I had some good results but sometimes, like this time, after a cleaning I ended up with an unreadable disk even trying to be as gentle as possible with cotton pad and IPA. It certainly needs patience... with more practice I'm sure I'll improve my skills!

Thanks again!

I'd never thought of that. I use a microfibre cloth folded to cover both surfaces of the floppy slot, rubbing back and forth while turning the spindle in the cleaner jig. What you've said is much gentler.
