Notepad is compatible, but you need special character (square) at end of each line as return/enter. You can just copy & paste it from startup-sequence.

Any text editor which supports unix format text files will be fine.

Notepad and Wordpad can technically both be used but it's awkward.

Just grab something like PSPad or Notepad+.

use textpad, it works great. Notepad and wordpad do not have the proper carriage return so it messes up scripts.

http://www.textpad.com/

this works lke a charm and is ideal for search/replace etc.

I vote for Notepad++, but there's another solution. If you use Windows line breaks, you'll normally get errors, because AmigaDOS takes the extra CR (Amiga line breaks are LF, Windows line breaks are CR+LF) as part of the line. If you add a semicolon (;) to the end of every line, however, the extra CR will be taken as part of the comment at the end of the line and it's okay. Of course a proper editor is still better, but just adding a semicolon works just fine, too.

First Edit: Some links...

Notepad++: http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/
Notepad++ Portable: http://portableapps.com/apps/develop...padpp_portable

Second Edit: Some clarification... (about the alternative solution)

In Windows notepad.exe, for instance, that means remove the aforementioned square which appears in place of line breaks, use normal line breaks, and add a semicolon to the end of every line (making sure there's no extra blank line at the end).

Hi bllpla,

To edit my Amiga Startup-Sequence and similar text files on my Windows PC, first I use Cygnus Hex Editor FREE EDITION (my favourite binary file editor) to replace every instance of LF (0A) with CRLF (0A 0D).

This replaces the AmigaDOS line delimiters with PC DOS line delimiters, which makes the Startup-Sequence compatible with Notepad and Wordpad.

Then, when I have finished editing the file, I once again use Cygnus Hex Editor to reverse the process and replace every instance of CRLF once more with LF.

Job done! No trialware necessary.

Er, Notepad++ for example is free and much less hassle. Maybe you should try it prowler

Hi TCD/KG,

It's really no hassle (for me at least). I always keep Cygnus Hex Editor handy in Windows. Macintosh text files have the same problem.

In addition, on many occasions I have downloaded a compressed file which appears to be corrupt, but inspection with a binary file editor reveals that it has merely been subjected to text-filtering of some kind, and the damage can be undone in much the same way as I have described above. Very often, only one or two bytes need changing/adding/removing!

But, I'll have a look at Notepad+ too. Actually, that's probably the best solution for bllpla.

Do you have a link, TCD?
