Icaros Desktop

IcarOS 2.2.2

Icaros Desktop 2.2.2 has been releasead! It took a long time, but a new milestone has been reached. This version includes a preliminary version of Janus-UAE2, Oliver's port of WinUAE to AROS, compiled for ABIv0. There are many features still missing, including support to some ROMs and all the coherency stuff, but fans of emulation should be really curious about this new Amiga emulator, which is being brought to AROS. In the (far, but hopefully not so far) future, Janus-UAE2 will replace Janus-UAE in AmiBridge, so please test it and report to Oliver bugs and suggestions. Janus-UAE2 is currently available in the Live! edition only, and it is placed in Extras:Emu drawer

That's not, obviously, the only news here. As anticipated, we've polished Icaros' user interface and added some useful new actions to Magellan buttons, using the middle mouse button. In particular, it is now possible to calculate and show size for directories and to add files to TAR archives, other than LHA and ZIP as usual. Thanks to Yannick Erb, both ZunePaint and ZuneView can now save images to ILBM formats, which were very popular in the age of classic Amiga. This will hopefully make adding new buttons to Magellan easier! ;-

New from Icaros Desktop 2.2.2:

updated ZuneView and ZunePaint to latest releases
+ now they can save images to various ILBM formats
- updated AmiCloud client
- added DigiClock to system utilities
+ a clock is now integrated on menu bar's top right corner
- added Janus-UAE2 (WinUAE port) to Emulators
- added RemoteAROSShell
+ you can access to Icaros via Telnet from another host

- added GLColumns to OpenGL Games
- added MUI examples to Development
- added metaDiary to Applications
- added RTF-Riddle to Applications
- added BackupCopy to Filesystems
- updated Hollywood plugins to latest version
- updated AROS libraries
- updated AROS system files
- added mod2wav to CLI commands
- added PDF to PNG option in Magellan GUI
- added MOD to wave option in Magellan GUI
- updated redit (68K) to version 2
- added GPmark to Benchmarks
- added b4sdl and HGui to develoment languages/tools
- added clipo to management tools
- added LuxCC to development tools
- added VMT to misc
- added VAMP to Multimedia players
- added AmiTimeKeeper to Networking
- updated cloud handlers for Gdrive and Dropbox

Icaros desktop is X86 only, not running on ARM devices

the only ARM based distribution i am aware of is Aeros

http://www.aeros-os.org/

I think there are even special raspberry versions

Icaros Desktop 2.1.1

The second update pack for Icaros Desktop 2.1 has been released. For the first time in the x86 land, an AROS distribution supports Windows 7 (Vista/2008 and upwards) shared folders through SMB handler, but that's not the only big news in the "networking drives department": we also included Norbert Kett's handler for DropBox and a client for AmiCloud and the IndieGO! e-shop. Users of Amiga productivity applications will enjoy the refresh of AROS M68K system files, with a new, faster RTG driver. Last but not least, we also added Mapparium 0.4 to our distribution.

More information and screenshots at
http://vmwaros.blogspot.it/2016/06/s...ktop-v212.html

AROS intrigues me, since it's the only x86 Amiga-like OS, and it's also open source.

However its limited hardware support means I haven't built a dedicated box for it yet, just running it in a VM. It feels a bit silly having to shop for 2005-2008 era components in order to run a "Next-gen" OS. Also I'm no fan of the default color/window theme, but if you switch to something a bit more sane it actually doesn't look bad.

Nice "wanna be windows" desktop. No wonder why people haven't found AROS.

Well this is not so, if supported, ICAROS can natively install on even newer PC, Also an installation on Pen Drive you can, but it is best to use an external hard drive, in this way you can start ICAROS on every PC we want.

I am attaching some interesting old videos:

Did you know that on EROS and can emulate all the old Commodore and Amiga platforms and more, with both emulators native AROS or through an interpreter as Wine on Linux?

Icaros Desktop from RAM Drive (Windows)

Verifica teorica - this video shows a Icaros Desktop virtual machine running from a Windows RAM Drive (yes, there are RAM drives for Windows too...). AROS applications start blazingly fast, even heavier ones like OWB and AmiBridge. How fast would AROS run, in general, if the whole filesystem could be moved to RAM (By Paolone autor Distro IcarOS)

A new update for Icaros Desktop is available for download.

Icaros Desktop 2.1.3 Download

This release mostly updates and fixes applications, and does not include latest enhancements to AROS code (this will happen next time...). Whole Icaros Desktop Live! (1.7 GB) and an update pack (38 MB) are available for download. Users of Icaros Desktop Light will need to use LiveUpdater with the update pack to upgrade their system.
