Atari ST Demo ripped from Amiga

I remember seeing this run on an Atari St and boasting it could match an Amiga of the coders tried hard enough.

That's probably quite true actually in the same way that i like to see A500 demos pushing hard to emulate some of what A1200 more easily achieves.More fasinating still is seeing even earlier machines like Spectrum or Vic20 pulling out magic as well.I could watch boundry pushing demos all day.

or see C64 demos and games built 10 years ago and compare them to 20 years ago

sometimes it is like a different machine entirely

You mean, like Robotic Liberation on an unexpanded Vic 20:

[ Show youtube player ]

Definitely the best computer demo I've ever seen; the fact that it runs on an unexpanded Vic 20 is unbelievable but true! Speech synthesis? Smoothly animated high res multi-coloured graphics? My favourite part, though, is the theme.

"All Mechanical creatures
Under humiliation
Combine together and fight for
Robotic Liberation"

I'm waiting for my Vic 20 to turn on me...

GOOD GRIEF!

If you've never seen (moreover heard) the Robotic liberation track linked by Digital Quirk, do so right now.

There's only a few times I'm impressed by the cleverness of coders in squeezing the last bit out of a machine, and this is one of 'em. Hats off, that is astounding.

I saw the guy demonstrating Robotic Warrior in Alternative Party in 2003. All I can say is that the majority of people were not prepared for what they saw. At the end, the whole theater was clapping and screaming. It was the most memorable computer moment I experienced.

I remember a demo on the speccy (a magazine coverdisk i think) YS or SU and it showed thousands of colourerd dots on the screen apparently getting around the hardware colour clash limitation. It was things like this that always amazed me. Unfortunately this was at the end of the speccys life. If it was at the beginning, who knows what wonders would have been made. Do people still do things like that with speccy hardware? it would be interesting to see what people can do with 2008 ideas&knowledge on 1983 hardware.

I don't think it will ever be possible to push the hardware that far at the beginning of a machine's life; it takes years to learn all the little quirks and things of the hardware. That's why people still manage to push machines seemingly beyond their limits, even now.

I think i should add my

*FUCK ME*

to the cause...

damn impressive for a VIC-20 no less....

i do remember a 20 second very badly digitized song from tina turner (i can't stand the rain) on the C64... but it had no visuals that i remember...

is it a joke ?

sometimes they use some mods/fonts from Amiga but they do some original effect of course.
Of course, they've done some remake of some famous Amiga Demos (D.O.C demos for example) just to proove they can done them.

But for example most of ST demos feature a "Main Menu" which looks like a mini game, it's a classic on ST but not at all on Amiga.

Quite often, these kind of demos require every aspect of the computer focused just to create that demo, leaving no room to actually do anything useful with it. For instance, consider Impossiblator 3:

Further on in the video, we see a 3D view of a roadway which appears as though it would make for a great racing style game. Unfortunately, this demo pushes the Vic 20 hardware to the point where having a user-controlled image on the screen would be impossible; even if it was a simple box with only two directions.

With regards to the Spectrum, it's possible that this "Trick" to get around the hardware colour clash limitation works okay for coloured dots on the screen, but may present further limitations if you were to actually create a recognizable picture with it.

One computer that I think was really underutilized was the Commodore 16/Plus 4 duo. These two were capable of so much untapped potential; had they been further developed, I'd bet they could've competed with 16 bit systems:

Yes just as you mentionen there is original stuff aswell but most is probably based on C-64 and Amiga effects.
The "main menu" is great and is what makes the ST demoscene unique.
