Old IDE Hard drive - usb case - winuae?

Forgive me about this but my head is a little fuzzy and I cant remember something. Can I access/mount an amiga formatted hard drive by using an usb enclosure with winuae?

Ive done all the compact flash thing which is great but I stumbled upon a really old drive that I know 100% was in an a1200 many years ago. I am sure it was not formatted and just left stored away and has been for years. I want to back it up, image it and just curious as to what it might hold.

Yes, that will work, but be very careful to cancel any request Windows makes to try to initialize the drive or assign a drive letter to it.

Mount the drive in the WinUAE GUI as an Amiga hard drive, and then you should be able to access it in the emulation to see what it contains.

Don't forget to start WinUAE in admin mode, if you are using Vista/W7.

If the drive is really old (i.e. less then 1GB) then it might not work in an USB enclosure. In this case you better get a cable to connect it to the motherboard's IDE controller. If the BIOS detects it, then WinUAE will, too.

Arggh well its old and small! 420 something mb's without going to look at it now...

I have a group of machines running xp sp2 and windows 7. Will probably use one machine with 7 on it as its the best all rounder, everything I have is hooked up apart from my catweasal.

Canceling any request revolves around windows trying to have its wicked way right? as in formatting etc... will defo make sure that will not happen!

Thanx guys

If you already have the USB adapter and don't need to buy one, then you should try it out. I don't know exactly where the generation step is, 1GB was only a guess. The only drive I ever tried which did not work was a 40MB drive from an A600. All other of my Amiga drives are bigger than 1GB. And 3.5".

Just make sure that you never connect the Amiga drive to a Win95 or Win98 machine. They will destroy the Amiga partition table and are not able to access the drive anyway.

I've done this with a Sabrent USB enclosure. The number of times you can do this and swap the drive back into the Amiga is limited. At some point, the enclosure will quit recognizing the drive. The drive will be fine.
