Battletoads CD32 hack (still crap)
I've wasted way too much time on this already, I'm not sure if I'll put in any more time on it (I may possibly do if there's any breaking issues introduced by the hack).
Anyway, the biggest (of many) problems with Battletoad is how the controls are handled. There are a lot of beat-em-up style games on Amiga that map all controls down to one button. Battletoads handles it worse than most, in that - while it's traditional for UP+FIRE on an Amiga beat em up to trigger a jump - Battletoads will trigger a jump if you're moving in ANY direction and press FIRE. This would be bad enough for a traditional beat-em-up, but Battletoads is basically a platformer - for the most part, it's only really the first level that's a Double Dragons style of game. What I've done here is: - Altered various state machine tables so that jump can only be triggered if the joystick is being held up (I may have been too aggressive here, if I've done anything that's obviously broken I can roll it back some of the changes). - Made it so that regular fire won't trigger a jump - Made it so that second fire will trigger a jump - Added life/energy trainers - Disabled second player (Two player mode introduced some issues on top of the hacks) Controls: Red: Attack Blue: Jump Yellow: Normal Attack (Doesn't disable up direction, so it's possible to jump with this. Mostly useful for shoot em up stages where it's not possible to jump regardless) Reverse: Restore lives trainer Forward: Restore energy trainer This is only an ISO for CD32, it -might- be possible to WHDLoad install it, I haven't tested. https://mega.nz/#!tvJ2nI5a!j5DOhTwUh...BvME1QVeRXNVF0 |

Oh, it plays surprisingly well!
Too bad, the WHDload install doesn´t work. I really think it´s worth it. |

I had a quick look at WHDLoad, it'd be a pain to do. Part of the reason is, the WHDLoad version doesn't use the "launcher" app (Battle), which is what does the CD32 pad reading (so it doesn't appear to be possible in the WHDLoad version to, for example, set music/sfx with CD32 pad buttons).
I did do a hack on a cracked and trained ADF. The difference with that one is: - The state tables have likewise been changed so that jump won't be triggered while moving down, left or right - You can still jump by holding up on the joystick and pressing fire, (or just tapping up on the platformer stages) so the control scheme is much more like you'd expect from an Amiga game - In the ADF version, two player is still available New upload (including CD32 ISO) is at http://earok.net/amiga/BattleToadsEarokHack.zip Last edited by earok; 29 October 2019 at 08:48. |

Heya earok,
Thanks for this; it's not a great game but this improves things Shall we call this "Battletoads SE" like most of your other hacks; or no? |

Here's what I've done, and this is about the best I can do.
I've done a WHDLoad version, BUT - like the floppy version, the only difference is the control tables have been altered so you need to be holding down UP to jump (as opposed to any direction). It doesn't have two button support, but the slave already had lives trainer support (F10), and unlike the CD32 ISO the second player support is still there.
