Amiga 1200 Pal is booting in Ntsc

Hi. I have an Amiga 1200 Rev 1D1. All seems the be ok but, dispite it is a Pal Version, it is always booting in Ntsc by default. I can enter the Amiga Early Startup Control and select Pal and then i can select a Pal screen mode but not by default.

I am using AmigaOS 3.1.4.

Thanks in advance.

You don't have any PAL screenmode installed. You need to put PAL screenmode in Devs:monitors/

I don't think that is the problem. Because if i boot Amiga Early Startup Control Ntsc is shown as default and if i choose Pal, then i can select Pal Screen modes, as you can see in the photos.

Wang was the UK Company Servicing Amiga's back in the 90's....

Do you have either a PAL or NTSC Monitor in Devs/Monitors?

If not drag & drop the PAL Monitor from Storage/Monitors into Devs/Monitors

If NTSC is in Devs/Monitors, just drag the NTSC Monitor into Storage/Monitors.

With the PAL Monitor in Devs/Monitors select the PAL screenmode 640 x 256, save it & Power off.

Power on & you should be in PAL by default.

No, I don't think so. From your description you were right, the mainboard is jumpered for NTSC if that is the default shown in the early startup menu. Also if you don't have anything in Devs/Monitors, it will show the default modes matching the mainboard.

Putting the opposite driver into Devs/Monitors is only a workaround. Putting PAL into Devs/Monitors will add PAL to the screenmode list. NTSC modes will still be shown. And this only works on Workbench. Games will still boot into NTSC.

Q. Is there an internal jumper on the A1200 to set it to default to PAL or NTSC video?

A. No, but if you're really motivated, you can rig this up. My thanks to Tetsuo Oda and Byron Montgomerie, who provided the information that connecting pin 41 of the Alice custom chip to ground causes the A1200 to default to NTSC, while pulling this pin high (disconnecting it from the motherboard and connecting it to +5V through a 4.7k resistor) will make the default power-up state PAL. I would point out that making a modification like this on a surface-mount chip is difficult at best, and you may end up needing an expensive motherboard replacement, or, at worst, a dead A1200 that needs an expensive replacement motherboard available. In most cases, using the boot menu (obtained by pressing both mouse buttons on power-up or reset) to switch to PAL is sufficient. However, with some games, the hardware patch will be necessary to insure proper timing (changing to PAL via the boot menu might make a 50 Hz game run at 60 Hz timing, or vice versa).

*edit* @ the very bottom.

Looking at the oscillator this is a Pal Board, NTSC has a 28.6363MHz oscillator

Yep, i did try some games and they are running at 60hz, so something is forcing ntsc, because the board is definitely Pal.

Here it it showing NTSC Alice:

Check R203, located on the bottom of the PCB between the IDE connector and the side of the PCB, near the edge of the board.

A 0 ohm jumper on R203 tells Alice to default to NTSC, if it's unpopulated it should default to PAL.

I did check it before, and it is empty.

I was delaying recapping because i was out of time and the capacitors seem ok, doing a closer check i discovered the C822 is leaking. Probably not related, but i will do a full recap.

I bought it from ebay a couple years ago.

The Alice chip is the same, both on Ntsc or Pal but depending on the board it works as Ntsc or Pal (how the pin 41 on the chip is connected to the board determines if it will output Pal or Ntsc).

After some time i did, finally, figure out what was the problem. There was a damaged track on the back of the board, and i was able to repair it with some solder, as you can see in the photo:

So in essence we found a quick way to make a PAL A1200 NTSC! Nice!
