A4091 rev A problems

Hi there,

I recently acquired an A4091 rev A SCSI controller (Commodore made), and am having some serious issues getting it to work. In fact, it doesn’t seem to work at all.

My setup:
- A4000D (rev B, Buster 11, recently recapped)
- A3660 rev 1.1 with ‘060 at 50 MHz
- 3.1.4 roms
- 16 MB fastram
- various Z3 boards (ZZ9000, X-Surf 100, BigRamPlus), all removed during test

Issue:
- machine freezes during boot: keyboard buffer fills up and caps lock doesn’t respond anymore. Unable to open early boot menu

Removing the boot rom on the A4091 allows the machine to boot, but obviously the controller isn’t recognized anymore

Is there a know compatibility issue between the A3660 and A4091? Would upgrading the boot rom solve this situation?

Thanks,

Alain

This was a scary board back in the day. Lot's of issues with A3640 cards so maybe some bug still exists with the newer A3660? - Might be worth talking to Chucky.

If you go here: http://www.l8r.net/install/hdc.html

....there is the last Install Disk & a Patch file for this board. - Do you have them in place? - The latter is around transfer speeds, though seemingly aimed @ the 2091 board in an A4K?

Version of 060 Library may also issues.

ROM for this board anyone?

Maybe a Rev B A4091 is ok??

Thanks for the quick reply!

As I can’t even get into the early boot menu, I haven’t bothered installing any software/patches. The 060 library I’m using is the latest by Thor.

What would be the best way to contact Chucky?

In my setup (an '060 with Buster 11), the card would also prevent booting unless I had other Zorro cards installed, and the 4091 was in the top slot. (There might be more to that story, though it's been so long that I can't recall further details.) I would try the latest ROM (or Toni's) if you can. Also, the 4091's electrolytic capacitors tend to leak, these should be replaced if possible.

His name is John Hertell & easily find-able on the Web. You can find him on this Web site too.

The A3660 has no firmware to handle unimplemented instructions like most 68060 cards do. AmigaOS 3.1.4 ROMs are clean so won't crash but the A4091 ROM is probably executing crap before 68060.library gets initialized. You might need someone to make a patched ROM for the A4091.

I'd suggest playing with the external terminator dip switch. It requires Active Termination.
The A4091 requires Buster 11 and at least Rev 3.1 of the A3640, I assume the A3660 is equivalent to Rev 3.2, so that shouldn't be an issue. Though I used an A3640 with an 060 adapter with the A4091 without any problems. As I recall the ROM is compatible with the last Rev B version A4091 from DKB, there aren't any real differences between the C= and DKB versions, the board is just cleaned up on Rev B and has the updated ROM (and driver).
I'm using a DKB A4091 Rev B with a CSMK-2 w/060 and a Mediator and don't seem to have any problems in the top slot. Actually that's the only place I can put it with the PPC card, PCI GFX card, SB128 and NIC.
You could try Toni's WarpEngine ROM for the A4091, it generally worked for me, though it wasn't quite as fast as with the original ROM, I suspected it wasn't turning on Synchronous mode, but it could have been some other issue.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I tried putting the card in different slots, with different combinations of the other cards. I also made sure the termination on both ends was correct (dipswitch for external, jumper on cd changer for internal), but it just doesn’t want to boot.

As I suspect it’s an issue with the ROM, I was wondering if anyone is willing to burn two ROMs for me? One with the rev B (40.13) firmware, and one with the firmware suggested by grelbfarlk? I don’t have any equipment for doing this...

I was having the same issues with my 4000 and 4091. It all started with intermittent lock ups etc then it would never boot again. Thought my 4000 died. Removed card and it booted fine. Then thought the card was dead. Decided to try again months later but I cleaned the contacts with DeOxit Cleaner really good and it fired right up and works now.

For those of you interested: I sent the card to a friendly Amigan to have it repaired - turns out that some pins of the SCSI chip had come loose from the pcb... Some soldering later, and the card was fully functional again!
