Deluxe Paint I (1985): Stuck on the Title Screen [TOSEC]
I'm doing a little 1985 Amiga archeology. Deluxe Paint 1 doesn't go beyond the title screen. According to the reference card, KS 1.1 should be used and dpaint is to be given at the prompt. I've tried several A1000 configuration setups in WinUAE and the result is always the same. I'm using the TOSEC floppy (the one without the [a]). The floppy stops loading on track 15.
Does anyone know how to start DPaint1 successfully, like it was done back in the day? Or is this a non-cracked version that won't boot? Thanks. EDIT: Title now with [TOSEC] instead of [WinUAE]. Not sure what you mean by the title screen. I tried the most common A500 config. The disk loads directly into DPaint without a prompt. It shows the title bar at the top, the tool bar on the right and and a "Deluxe Paint by Daniel Silva" plate in the middle. The latter is a painting. You can draw over it with the mouse or remove it by clicking on the CLR button. The menu can be opened by holding down the right mouse button on the title bar as common with AmigaOS.

I think the version djukon is talking about is 'Deluxe Paint (1985)(Electronic Arts)' and not 'Deluxe Paint I (1986)(Electronic Arts)'
where the title screen is :- where all disk activity stops at track 15, and no matter what you do, it just won't go beyond it. I have tried mouse buttons to joystick buttons, and every key on the keyboard but to no avail. I have tried the most common A500 config and then other various Kickstarts, including the A1000 configs & kickstarts, but it does exactly the same. Although it does seem to seek DF1: if the drive is available, not sure if that's any help though. Last edited by DH; 17 October 2013 at 16:44. |

Same as above, except that I have to enter dpaint at the prompt. I never see this screen. A500 most common, least compatibility, fastest possible, floppy speed turbo. |

Usually if there's a problem with an adf, the TOSEC guys find out what it is and then they mark it up or rename it accordingly. I have checked and the filename is correctly named using the latest TOSEC set (v2013-04-07).
Maybe this works flawlessly on a real Amiga, but has never been tested on WinUAE and that's why it has slipped the net? thomas, I got the adf from the eab fileserver, CRC 659E8541, just to be sure we're using the same one. I too have to enter 'dpaint' at the prompt and hit enter. EDIT: I have tried your config, and all I get is a flash of the title screen, then it crashes and freezes at track 5. Surely we're using different versions? EDIT2: I have uploaded the version I have to the zone for you to check thomas Last edited by DH; 17 October 2013 at 17:09. |

I'm using WinUAE 2.6.1. To clarify, I used 800% floppy speed and tried both NTSC and PAL. How about you, thomas? Forgot to mention, I had also previously tried adding a blank floppy to df1:, yet it only reads that it is there and stops all the same. Last edited by prowler; 17 October 2013 at 23:26. Oh dear, seems I totally misread the first post. I always used the one with [a].
The one without gets stuck at the title screen. You can hide the screen if you try to drag it down. But then you only see the Workbench screen with the prompt. |

Same happens on my real A1000 (KS 1.1 and 1.3).
Versions have different file structure, [a] has single dpaint executable, non-[a] has tiny loader and the rest is in c: |

Not to worry thomas
Seems like this version needs investigating via the TOSEC guys on here to see how it's entry should be fixed. EDIT: Thanks for the info Toni |

It is protected with the old EA encryption (which was quite good back in the day!). Since the protection track is missing the files won't be decrypted correctly for obvious reasons.

Next steps
Thanks guys for clarifying this up. EAB, as usual, saves the day . Should I prepend the thread title with [CLARIFIED] or similar? Besides, should I report this to TOSEC personnel, or do they check this forum?

we have to wait for confirming, since "Crashdisk" is maintainer of the Apps section. |

I have an original DeluxePaint that has (c) 1985 on it where you have to type 'dpaint' to run, dpaint size is 166964 bytes, no loading screen like post #3.
This doesn't appear copy protected, at least xcopy nibble shows nothing obvious. If you want it zoned let me know. |

Thank you, though I believe it might not be necessary (at least for me it isn't). If you image it and it turns out to be the same [a] version, will it become a verified one? I'm unfamiliar with the TOSEC verification procedure (i.e. [!]). |
