Remove newicons..?

I installed ClassicWB (I love it !) ADVSP on my A1200 some moments back in time (030 50MHz 32MB RAM - 640x480 indivision), but I find it utterly slow. 64 color-icons, what on earth was I thinking? If I turn the colors to 8 or 16 (aah), the icons are so ugly they SCREAM for attention.

So, here I ask today: Is there an easy way to remove the newicons, so I get the old, simple ones back? I can't be arsed to do a new install, I don't have any CD-ROM drive, and the only way is to struggle with the CF PCMCIA adapter, or open the Amiga and pick out the CF card, then grab a lot of stuff and wires to connect it to my PC, then...

Doesn't NewIcons install itself in the startup-sequence? Surely all you have to do is remove its entry in there and you should be back to normal...?

Yep, just comment 'run <>NIL: c:newicons' out by adding a ';' at the start of the line.

I already commented that one out, found it some days ago, in happiness. But then it all came down to anger and agony when it didn't do jack shit!

I'm surprised it's so slow on a 030, as fizsteve recently showed me how fast ADV SP was on a basic 020 with just Fastram!!! See here:

[ Show youtube player ]

Unless Youtube has sped up the frame rate. I was surprised he was willing to run ADV SP on an 020, as I normally recommend ADV or below using normal icons for performance reasons.

Something seems wrong - it shouldn't be that slow on an 030 50Mhz. Have you got FBlit and iconbefast enabled from the Settings or Tools menu?

To update the icons, you'd have to make an icon pack yourself in WinUAE. Literally use Dopus or shell to copy over all the ".info" files to another directory/HDF file, zip it up, then unzip it on-top of your install. It will overwrite all the newicons with standard old icons.

A bit messy, but it should work.

Fblit, ftext, BlazeWCP and IconsBeFast are enabled...
I run NTSC High-Res Interlaced 720x482, 64 colors. (Indivision AGA 1200)...

Let me have an extra look in the startup files agian, then I'll report back.
REPORT: Looked in both s:startup-sequence and s:user-startup - no NewIcon execution there... I guess I really *did* remove it, and cried afteron.

No offense, but I find that very slow/sloppy :/
8 colors in 640x480 is perfect, I need some new icons with minimalistic colors!

ClassicWB runs Scalos - newicons can't be disabled and if they were, he'd be left with dots and no icons!

Indeed, use FBlit, and turn on the RTG option in the NewIcons prefs (only works with FBlit if you only have AGA). I use it that way, and it's not slow at all.

Thorham, FBlit is powering the icons and Scalos windows as I've just confirmed with 8bitbubsy it's enabled above. The RTG option isn't required in Scalos. It is used by default in the pure Workbench boot option.

Strange 8bitbubsy, shouldn't be running painfully slow if it's that fast with an 020. Just simulated a slower CPU in WinUAE, it's also quite fast. Don't understand.

Heh, RTG mode was disabled. I enabled it.. Seems a bit faster! Maybe placebo?
Well, still a bit sloppy.. Get alot of "traces" from delayed window closings..

BTW: NewIcons is still removed from user-startup... Should I put it back in?

It's not in the user-startup file? It's in the WBboot-Sequence?

Are you using an older version? This could get confusing.

No, I removed it myself... I'm not sure how the command goes again... I think it was more than just "C:NewIcons"... Oww, my memory is so bad albeit my young age

Actually I lied. You do need RTG enabled even in Scalos. It is enabled by default in the packs however, not sure why is was disabled in 8bitbubsy's case, so leave it enabled 8bitbubsy as it is faster!

Yep, I disabled RTG myself because I read somewhere that it only worked with graphics cards like Picasso etc... Well, now it is enabled again.

Look!! A three-headed monkey:
Should I still append the C:NewIcons to one of my startup-files, as I removed it earlier?

Not in a sharing mood. My Beer. MY BEER! I'm drinking nothing special, just Budvar Budweiser - those big bottles brewed over in Czech.

Anyway, not to get off track and answer your original question - see my first answer, you'd need to make your own icon pack by copying over all the ".info" files.

Check what version you're running 8bitbubsy - is it v24? The most recent?

I don't remember the ADVSP having newicons in the user-startup. It doesn't require it for Scalos.
