CD drive problems with CF card on A1200

I've bought myself an external slim cd drive with an CF card adapter and an 2.5"->2.5"->2.5" cable.
Everything attached to the internal 2.5" IDE port in the A 1200.

I've installed the ClassicWB package on the Amiga and installed Idefix 97 for CD ROM usage.

The FindDevice program from the Idefix package can't find the CD drive.

I even can not find a useful tutorial about using 2 IDE drives with the internal A1200 IDE port.
Could it be that the CF card is the problem?
I've replaced the CD drive with a normal 2.5" HDD and then the Amiga boots from the HDD instead from the CF card. Although the CF card is set as master.

has anyone of you similar experiences???

Some seem to be able to run with 2 devices on the internal ide. I am not a pro and could not make it work without a buffered interface. In my case an ide fix express.

I'm not sure if it is a hard or software problem. Which is the best CDFS solution for Amiga?
When i was younger and working with my A 2000 i had a buddha controller which worked without problems with the idefix drivers. But i have no experience with the A1200 IDE port.

EDIT: This is how i've connected it....as already said...the CF card is set to Master.

Are you able to set the CD-Rom as slave?

I have to use an eide'99 Ide interface to get my set up working, like crazyc, I couldn't get it to work without one.

Some CF cards just wont work with CDROM on same channel. I had this problem. I ended up using a proper HDD. Later I got an IDE splitter and put CDROM on second channel and used ATAPI.device to activate it. Worked fine with CF then as they were on seperate channels.

+1 for what FOL say's it seems to be just plain luck if it works or not, better to get a buffered 4 way IDE splitter.

Some CD drives force as Master so setting the CF as Slave might help however as said, better to go with a buffered 4way device.

Good luck!

Steve.

IdeFixmax97 is one of the better versions that seem to work with Just CF - CDrom, with no adapter I know I`ve done loads of them.

One thing also not all Atapi/IDE CD drives will work with the setup again it took me a while but found the one that will reliably.

And after installing IDEfix go to the Startup sequence and remove the lines that IDEfix as added to the startup( Very start of Startup sequence) as it can have some conflict issues

And yes the 2.5" HD will boot when you put it with the Cf as master because the 2.5" HD is set as master by default also with no option jumper for slave.

yes you can get it up and running without a buffered adapter, all you need is : 1. compatible slim CDrom + JAE adapter(50pin to 44 pin IDE) 2. IDEfix97 3. Cf to IDE adapter (44 pin).

If you have all this you can sort it but my guess is your CDrom is not compatible.

You can make an unbuffered 4ide splitter with two diodes.

Thanks for this, but someone on Facebook advised me to try a beta version of the scsi.device that was never released.

and yes..it worked, but suddenly I`ve got some checksum errors on my CF drive.
