Network help with Aros pls

Hi. Just installed the latest version of Aros onto a Dell Dimension 2400.

I can't get the thing online though. Can anyone help. Aros own documentaton in this area is useless.

Cheers

I have an old Dell Latitude and an HP Pavillion. Neither will connect to the net as the driver supplied isn't compatible with my hardware.

I have tried numerous times to get it to work but I gave up. I'm hoping that one day a driver will be released that works for me.

First up... is the network card even detected by AROS?
If not, is it a chipset that is mentioned as "compatible" in the docs?
Is it wireless or wired? If it's wired, it could be any number of problems, if it's wired, there's only three possible things that can be wrong, harware wise: 1) the network card 2) the actually cable, or 3) the router

If the cable and router works on another computer and/or the same computer with a different OS, then all three should be fine.
Then it's onto a question of drivers: Obviously, AROS isn't "supported" by hardware vendors like Mac or Windows is. AROS might be depending on a Linux driver for the hardware to work, in which case you might have to find the driver and tweak around and conpile it yourself.

These are my initial thoughts on what can be wrong with any network connection, I'm sure there's other people who's done what you want to do and got it to work and is able to help more.

Most probably the Broadcom 440X onboard ethernet chipset. On page 13 of the Aros manual section 2.6 for network, this chipset isn't listed as being supported (quoted below).
You could try each of the drivers in turn to see if one works, otherwise just grab a cheap generic pci card, check the details/branding on the larger chip onboard, or on the card itself for a supported chipset.
I've used a few different 3com cards with my aros box and all worked ok. Check page 33 section 4.4 for configuring.
Quick ebay check:

Hope this helps.

"Any PCI network card based on RTL 8029, Etherlink 3, AMD Pcnet 32, Nvidia Nforce, intel Pro-100, RTL80139, RTL 8168/9 (also 8110 and others), SiS 900, Via Rhine will work. Using one of those is the only way to get networking run on AROS. No modems supported yet.
Note: if you have a TRL8168 or compatible network card, and issues with the TRTL8168 driver, please choose the RTL8169 instead!"
