Gotek as external drive
I have an Amiga 1200 with 3 external drive in a row. I'd like to add an external Gotek drive as df4.
Is it possible to add it on the external female floppy port of my df3 to have it as df4? Thank you for all, pincoo |

You cannot have more than 4 drives in total, i.e. df0 to df3.

No more than 4? So it is not possible to have df4 on my Amiga. Isn't it?
So if I remove my last one, can I mount Gotek to be my last df3? Many thanks, pincoo |

Sure, if the external case it is mounted in is configured correctly, then it should work fine as DF3, just like any other drive.
The number of possible floppy drives is determined by the number of drive select signals, and all Amigas have only DS0 through DS3 (shown as DF0-DF3 in the system), thus only 4 can work at the same time. |

Ok, so is there any Gotek distribution that is composed by Gotek and a good looking external drive shell? Speaking aboute cable I saw http://www.amibay.com/showthread.php...l-ROUND-cables
Could this cable be good for my purpose? |

That cable is meant for if you want to use a Gotek drive without having it mounted in a chassis.
I had a dead external Amiga drive and then I simply replaced the failing mechanical drive with the Gotek, so now I have an external floppy emulator. Regarding firmwares, I recommend buying the HxC firmware. Gotek does not make the emulator for Amigas specifically and the original software does not work with Amiga. |

I have to buy a Gotek, the cable seen before, a failed external amiga floppy, the HxC fw and that's all!
Am I wrong? |

You don't need the cable. It is either the cable or an external drive chassis. Most (all) external Amiga drives have a cable already.
Here are some pictures which show how it should look. |

Perfect, when I open my external drive I'll found the main cable (the lonely) that becomes a flat one and that will be connected to my Gotek? What about power? Have I take it form the flat cable? Do you have any photo that describe the internal connection of the external drive shell with the Gotek?

When gotek is in external Amiga case, you simply replace the floppy drive with the Gotek drive. Connecting the flat Data Cable and the Power cable.
I see you linked my cable thread. So I show, how I use my cable in the custom enclosure I made for my Gotek with HxC firmware and LCD display |

It's very simple really. Just open the external drive, remove the floppy mechanism and put the Gotek in its place. There is a ribbon cable and a power connector to connect.
Here's how the internals of an external drive can look (floppy drive at the bottom): You may need to move a jumper on the Gotek to change it to drive 0 or 1 (DS0 or DS1) depending on what the electronics in the external chassis is designed for. |

I haven't seen many, but I did have to move the jumper in my Gotek from the original position before it would work in my external chassis while the default jumper position worked fine when connected internally as DF0. I don't remember if I changed it to DS0 or DS1.

It is possible to force Amiga 1200 to use external drive (aka DF1) as a DF0? Easy with A500, there is CIA selector available, but what with A1200? I mean a non-destructive way.

[ Show youtube player ] I guess that counts as "destructive" to you though. |

Yes, unfortunately. But I expected that.

I would hardly consider this method "destructive" as it doesn't destroy anything.
