Did you checked the Western Digital site? They may have a software tool to re-flash the firmware of the drive.

All WD drives have secure erase. They can be unlocked at the cost of all data in 30 mins to an hour.

1. Connect the hard drive as primary master (remove the jumper)
2. Create a bootable floppy / USB Key / Optical disc with ATAPWD.EXE on it.
3. Boot from this media and launch ATAPWD.EXE select the WD80EB drive and press enter.
4. Select ERASE PREPARE and then ERASE UNIT.
5. Enter the master password: WDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWD
6. It will give you a Busy error, that means it is erasing the drive so please dont turn off the computer.
7. After 30min press F5 to refresh the list and you will see that the drive has become unlocked

Let us know how you get on. You should be fine. I've personally done this many times.

alexh, mmm, it looks like the hd is useless, after partioning, the icons dont always appear, when they do,and after quick format, and inst os3.1. then a reboot, i get a checksum error on block xxxxxx, it wont go any further,
i have even tried starting the DH0 partion, 50/100mbs in from cyl 2,
another hd, for the bin

Wait! Don't bin it yet. Partitioning and formatting an 8GB hard drive is not straightforward on the Amiga.

Bloodwych started a thread prior to releasing the latest Classic Workbench packs about large (>4GB) hard drive considerations.

prowler,
i have a fastata111, and use the hd split function, 2 x 4gig partions,
using the first for os 3.1 /os3.5, the second i intended to put os 4.0.

i have tried nosplit, just using the first 4gig,
no matter what i try, moving the size of the partions, and there position ( still within the first 4 gig )
still the same,checksum error

Most XBOX HD's have had a hard life by now. The temperatures inside the XBOX1 (particularly a v1.0 or 1.1) were very high. The HD is a common failure point. Unless it was removed shortly after the console was bought it doesn't really stand a chance of being in exceptional condition. Even then it has to have sat on the shelf for 5-6 years.

What does the SMART information say about it's health?

Nice I was going to recommend downloading that Tool from WD's website and doing a full zero erase and media check.

I finally recycled my old Xbox machine and it had a Seagate 8GB IDE drive installed, I have not used Seatools on it yet but I suspect if the drive is still ok I can erase it and test the media just like on a WD hard drive.

It's unlocked right?? Or you have the corresponding EPROM key?

Unlike WD, Seagate Xbox drives have no software way around the lock mechanism.
