Okay I dusted off the ST and fixed this today. I will probably get a release out later tonight which rolls up all the fixes I've done this week while testing on Amstrad CPC and Atari ST.

It should make things more reliable more generally, especially with machines using standard 'IBM-compatible' floppy controllers.

Nice work kaffer.
Don't take this as nagging i just remember you said you were looking at implementing it, but I don't know where it is on your priority list:

Folder navigation in config-less mode.

Question - What is the benefit of Index Mode over Config-Less? In Index Mode having to label disks with a non-representative title means you need a good memory or a piece of paper. Just like when there no LCD screens and only segment display. You needed a good memory or a cheat sheet.

Thanks

The release I'm about to announce has been lots of bug fixing. I think I'm ready to move back to updating the configuration/selection frontend code now. So this will be done soon. And third-button support. And a simple plain-test config file so various firmware options can be accessed.

There's little or no advantage I'd say, and it has your stated disadvantages. It was just simple to support, so I did

NEW RELEASE v0.6.2a

https://github.com/keirf/FlashFloppy/releases
  • Prettier 7x16 'narrow' LED font (Kingstener)
  • Remember last-selected slot in no-config mode (LASTDISK.IDX file
    must exist).
  • Ignore glitches on SIDE-select signal (fix for Eric Gustafson's A3000)
  • Various fixes for file selector on Atari ST and Amstard CPC
  • Suppress index pulse when writing to USB stick. Makes slow writes
more reliable (avoids timeouts on the host).
  • Optimised memory copying and clearing

I've not tried to make the lower box compatible with the original Gotek lid, but that's a good idea - though it may be a bit tricky to get a precise fit depending on the printer you have. As it stands right now, I'm only reusing the PCB and possibly the display and replacing the entire housing.

You should probably upload your project to www.thingiverse.com in case people want to donate or follow the project.

I also found the following design to be Interesting which allows 2 3.5 Floppys to go into a Dual 5.25 width Bay.

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2217061

I think my next Christmas present would be a 3D Printer.

I may do that once I'm more convinced the design is in a properly usable state. Incidentally, my print today actually came out ... quite well actually! I'm adding pictures as attachments, of the box & lid assembled, with the OLED display in place –currently running HxC firmware, displaying text on the display for demonstration purposes. That firmware uses a smaller font, but with the entire display visible, a bigger font would work perfectly. I used the screws from the original Gotek drive and they fit and hold everything in place very nicely.

(I still need to attach the third button.)

Nice! Alternatively you could print two copies of my design with a bay height & width of 41.3 mm × 146.1 mm, to match a half-height 5.25 inch bay each

3D printers are not that expensive - for example, the Monoprice Select Mini V2 is inexpensive ($219.99), easy to use, and supposedly produces very good quality for the price. It would certainly be able to print this shell!

Mike, thanks this is just what is needed. Mine is flashed with HXC firmware right now but I think this document will serve as a manual for the process for both HXC and FF firmwares and it is well put together. You might be able to allow people to comment on the doc directly but not amend it (I think Google docs allows that?) and can tweak as you like.

Great job. Thanks on behalf of the community.

A rotary with a push-button action would seal the deal! Will be great when you have directory navigation.
Watched the video a few times... definitely want to have this. And in the guide our kind friend Mike is writing

I'm not sure! The original document is actually a MS Word doc on my own PC, rather than using Google docs.
I left it as read only because I'm still working on it. (It really is only a rough draft at the moment)

When I'm done, and I'm finished tidying it up, I'll release it properly.
There is enough info in it at the moment to just flash a Gotek to FF or Cortex.
If anyone wants to make changes etc, when I'm done, I'm fine with that.
I need to add a proper intro/table of contents still, and maybe an index.

Oh, and a section for the types of displays that can be added.

And maybe, if I am still interested, a comparison of the types of hardware (Gotek, HxC SD, HxC USB etc) and types of displays.

And maybe a definitions section?
...
Does anyone else want anything added?

I've only used 0.6.1a, and only a little (last week, to check it worked!)
But, the same hardware works fine on the A600 (with Vampire)

Any disk image that required loading only worked fine (I tried several) but any time it tried to write, it failed. It also failed on booting the Autoboot.hfe from the main HxC archive (It gave a cannot write error I think. I can't remember exactly). Tried on a 4MB STE if it matters.

I'll try 0.6.2 this weekend on the ST (and A1200 too, probably)

Autoboot.hfe will now work. Writes also may now work. If you do see any problems I have an ST to hand now, so send me disk images and steps to reproduce the problem you see.

Rotary Encoder support

@keir...
i made a patch-file for the rotary-encoder-support. based on 0.6.2a

the encoder should be connected to the free pins of JK ( -> PC10 and PC11 @ STM32).
i hope you can include this in your next version.

Does the search feature work? It doesn't seem to work. Also the backspace key does not work when I type something and want to delete a character.

TjLaZer - It did work. I have not used it for quite a few versions as I have been doing 'Config-Less'.

I think it's got issues upstream too. Anyhow, I am removing the forked HxC file selector from the F-F distribution. It is not needed -- the original HxC file selector works fine, just as it does on Atari ST and Amstrad CPC too.

EDIT: This is now done in v0.6.3a release. The FAT filesystem access from within the selector is now also speeded up (could be up to 2x faster).
