A600 motherboard removal - help!
Hi, I dont consider myself thick but Im having real difficulty working out how to get the A600 motherboard out of its plastic case and shield. Ive stripped the A600 back to just the case bottom, bottom shield and motherboard. Can anybody shed light on my stupidity ?
Thanks Jim |

First you gotta get rid of the top shield if you have it, it's got a few metal tabs that keep it in place. Lift them and take it out.
Then there's one bolt you have to undo. With the ports facing backwards and the expansion connector on your right, the bold is right where the expansion port is. Look at this phto: Do you see it? it's big. After that, you have to pry the joystick ports out of the plastic, with a little wee force on the plastic. Don't be afraid but don't over do it or you'll break something. Pull the plastic towards the outside of the case a bit or try pushing the joystick ports slightly inwards while you try to lift the motherboard from the point the joystick ports are at. Once you have lifted that part of the motherboard, pull towards you and you should have the mobo + lower shield, which you can separate from one another easily. |

A600 mobo can be a real pain to pull out. Even when you get all the screws out. Somehow ports stick and jam in the holes.
Hope I wont have to do it again any time soon... |

If it doesn't look like they were removed by someone and were never mounted, it's probably as it's supposed to be. Some components are only present on some models as the PCB was adapted in production to varying components (different IC revisions etc.).

The board is a rev 2d and the components actually look like they've be knocked out or yanked off. Nothing is being read from the IDE connector so Im assuming these components may have something to do with that. Can anyone help Identify them ?

There are a few places where there are different components for NTSC and PAL models. It is normal for them to be missing on the opposite type.
C243 could be of this type and looks like it should be present on a PAL amiga. C461 seems to provide some power supply filtering for the video encoder. I think it would be there on all models. Just checked a PAL 2D I have here and both caps are present. Is yours NTSC? Anyway. I doubt they would affect IDE operation but if the board has been damaged in that area, IDE connector is right there so maybe a trace is damaged. Can you take photos of the area? |

Which kickstart ROM version is in it?
"Early revisions of the A600 shipped with Kickstart 37.299, which had neither support for the internal ATA controller, nor for the PCMCIA interface." Edit: Oh rev 2d. probably 37.350 then. should be OK, rom wise. revision 1, 1.1 () Kickstart v37.299 or v37.300 revision 1.3 () Kickstart v37.300 or v37.350 revision 2B, 2D () Kickstart v37.350 Last edited by Turran; 13 March 2013 at 19:00. |
