Swapping DF0 and DF1 on A600?

Hiho!

Is it possible to swap DF0: and DF1: on my A600 (and perhaps on A500 too ) ?
No permanent swap, but with a switch or somethimg like that...

Yes it's possible but seems to be totally impractical on an A600 because the disk select lines would have to be cut and reconnected on the motherboard itself. I've never actually owned an A600 so somebody that does may have a better idea.

With an A500 it's much simpler, you can just bend out the legs of the CIA chip (the one nearest the drive it's labelled U8 pins 13 &14) solder to them and poke some wires in the socket or, to avoid bending the legs of the chip itself, piggyback the CIA on top of a DIP socket and bend it's legs out instead.

So the only thing i have to do is swap pin 13 & 14? Sounds easy.
Which Pins on the A600-8520 ? SMD-soldering and desoldering is not that big problem for me.

edit: Found it. Pin 15 & 16 on U8.
Try it.

Well, I would bvvery much like this mod to be done in my A600. I am not going to get a replacement drive for it and I havee a fine roctec external that I just resurrected frm teh dead.

Is lifting the pins the onli solution? Can we do something else?

You can check this thread out that I started in Amibay.
It has all the info you want about switching DF0 with DF1 on A600

Cheers

Hey man!
I read that thread through, however, I cannot figure it out exactly.
It seems rkauer has posted a method in the last page where you don't have to lift CIA pins or cut motherboard traces, am I correct?
Is there a way that I can modify it somehow FORM the external drive or plugging something into the drive port or something?

Yeah! Exactly. Instead of cutting the trace on the mobo (which is kinda difficult due to the mini size) Rkauer said to use an easier technique.

- Cut the internal "leg" SEL1 (pin #21) of the external floppy connector. Keep it "flying" for now;
I found that rather difficult since the pin #21 on internal "leg" of the external floppy connector is not viewable (since the upper row is visible from the back - while the lower row that has Pin #21 is hidden by the upper row pins).

- Using a wire jumper (better with a wire with a proper connector), route the SEL0 signal from the floppy header to the now "flying" leg. Solder the wire in the leg.
That is rather easy if you can do the 1st step.

And can't I swap the signals on the external drive cable?
What is the "floppy header"?

No sadly you can't make the swap inside (since the signal will be wrong from the mobo) that's why Rkauer proposed the easy hack, or the normal one.

The floppy header is the internal floppy connector where you mount the ribbon for the normal DF0

This is the normal hack for the swap:

Oh, I see!

This won't work if i don't lift the pin, right?

I wonder if I should try this or if I should just go for teh HxC SD floppy emu. What do you thinK?

Tbh I was in the same dilemma but since I don't like external devices... I went for the HxC solution (I got the last but one piece).
It's not so difficult to make the 1st hack by cutting the trace though.

Hmmm.. my problem right now is money.
I love the HxC bt it's some money I can';t spend now.
How are you going to deal wih the screen and button? What pisses me off is that buttons come built into the board already. What if I want to relocate them?

Also: how do you change floppy disks with this thing?

Huh!
Can't you just take the drive out of the external and put it inside the 600?? I did and it worked.

Not every drive works the same. I have a Roctec Rocslim external drive. The drive is NOT the same.

Swapping the ds0 and ds1 lines on the Amiga 600 is very easy, even for people with low knowledge of electronics: just cut the two traces near the CIA chip and cross they.

They are in the 15 & 16 pin of CIA near the floppy header.

Then an external floppy will become DF0: transparently to the Amiga. No need to place something in the internal header.

I need to do this even that I have the HxC. I got some original games that needs to be loaded from DF0. My DF0 is HxC and DF1 is external. I would love to have switch so I can choose HxC or external to be DF0 or DF1. I can solder and lift pins but my understanding of switches is shite. I would appreciate greatly if someone could draw little schematic for me and others in the future. Thanks

Not sure if possible or not but can something like this be used or converted for use on Amiga?
