My project idea - Is it worthwhile?

Ok ive been thinking of this for a while. I want to put an amiga into the TV combi pictured below. (19") Turn it into a sort of IMAC sort of thing. We have upgraded all out TVs in the house to LCD so we have no use for this TV anymore. so rather than sell it for a few pounds, do this little project.

Do you think it possible?
in your honest opinion, a good idea?

The risk of electrocution from the high voltage associated with CRT televisions is IMO too high for a project like this.

So long as you know what you are doing and are aware of the high voltages that need to be earthed first before you muck on with it, I don't see why you cant look into it. Shielding the miggy may be your only main problem.

Amazing! modding a TV to an Amiga TV

Of course, you're taking a risk, I'd personally prefer to sell the TV for a few quid, than to try and mod it to put an Amiga inside + you may bugga the miggy in doing so 'n' then you'll kick yourself for trying.

There could be a problem with ripping the video mechanism out, It may be part of the TV mobo 'n' that's where your problems may start. I have ripped one of these apart before 'n' was quite surprised to see the Video 'n' TV mobo were combined with a special cradel supporting the mechanics etc for the video. Not all are like this and most use 2 seperate mobo's.

Still, it's worth a look to make sure what you have. But I still wouldn't try it

Don't the high voltage parts loose their charge of the course of a few days? Or is it much longer?

It's much longer thorham, to be on the safe side you really need to earth the system and keep it earthed while you muck on with it. These voltages can kill 'n' for anyone who doesn't know what they are doing, best leave it alone.

If you know what you are doing, I say go for it A600 Mobo would be cool.

BUT.................

First you need to ensure that the TV chassis is NOT of a HOT chassis design. by this I mean that the Gnd is not isolated and held at a live voltage level. This is done with some chassis to keep costs down.
These Hot chassis are usually identified by the inclusion of an Isolator between the Tuner input & the Aerial socket on the back, if it is present then beware the Tuner Body will be live at quite a few hundred volts.
These sets are also identified by the absence of a Scart socket, usually just RCA Video & Audio Inputs which are isolated by optocouplers.

But 10 out of 10 for thinking outside of the Box.

if you get zapped it'll generate 1.21Gigawatts... if you tune the TV to 1992 you can go back in time and buy some ram expansions for us!!

Well discharge the caps safely with a nice big resistor first, if you have any doubts don't feck around with it..

As for the video and tv cicuitry being combined, it'll still have a video in section. Maybe there'll be space regardless??

As alex has alluded to, you have to be really feckin' carefull with this HV stuff, Those caps are bad boys and no mistakin'..

But the idea itself, is kinda cool in my book

In fact i fancy building one meself..

to be honest Gordon,

I would suggest the plastics from a 19" CRT monitor (local recycle plant)
The PSU, pannel and front plastics from a 17" TFT monitor (£60)
a TFT/CRT Tuner from eBay (£35) or Indivision AGA (£110)
A1200 / A600 or CD32 ( the latter would be very cool) £25
IDE Fix (£10)
SVideo Mod Kit (£15)
Ide Cable (£5)
4.5GB HDD (£8)
3.1 Kickrom (£10)
PCMCIA CF transfer CARD (£10)
SFF DVD/CDRW (£12)
Installed Classic workbench
Cocolino or a Dimsy equivilant (£10-20)
DD FDD(£10)
Paints glue and screws (£10)

there..... job done

Oooooo what you could do for EXTRA groovey style points should that back light in the tft die, take the back off... put in a 100/150 watt bulb, a 12" magnifying lens about 18 inches from the screen, and you will have an Amiga Projector!!!! it would only be around 3.5 foot but pretty impressive for the ladies (obviously you would have to flip the tft panel around )
