I'm going to try this "lightbrighting" technique now, got an old pc joystick and CRT monitor to do, don't care how long it takes as long as I can get results without peroxide solutions and creams

Well it seems to be working but is much slower than the Bblond way. I should have taken a b4 and after pic.

I will do on the next Item i try.

You're the slow one - I posted this almost a year ago.

I used the method on several items last summer. Two C64Cs, a VIC20, one 128D keyboard and a separate C64 keyboard. The 128D keyboard was very yellowed and I let it sit outside for about 1 month, but it made a remarkable difference. It is still a bit yellow, but looks a lot better and there are no blotches or streaking. I could not determine whether the plastic had become more brittle, but I would assume that sun exposure might cause that in the long run.

Oh, and I gave them all a thorough clean before putting them outside as I guess that excessive dirt would block the light.

I can add that my VIC20 that got the treatment last year is still looking very good and doesn't seem to have reyellowed. At least not to an extent that is noticeable.

Pictures? No. Unless you have a proper fixed lighting setup with a calibrated camera, pics cannot really be trusted anyway. Changes in the white balance can cause white items to look yellow and vice versa.

I think it is a mix of both.

eg. I retrobrited an Atari STE and it ruined it (all blush etc)
I retrobrited an A500 and it was fine.

I think it largely depends on the plastics... Maybe some are better in sun than others and likewise with chemicals

I have a few yellowed and damaged Amiga cases that I can test the sun-whitening method on, will do so when I find them.

Any picture with natural light is indeed by definition to suffer from lots of natural variations in color and brightness.

But the solution is simple: do not use the sun as a light source when taking pictures.
Take the pictures in a room inside your house with all external light obstructed so that only stable internal light sources are in use. Preferably LED lights so that there is no variation in brightness and color tone over time.

This way you are guaranteed to have a stable enough color balance.

You can still have random variations if the camera you are using has automatic white balancing, brightness or other automatic adjustments. This can usually be disabled on most decent cameras, but you have to pay attention to that as well.

So these machines that are supposedly degrading via the sun brightening method. I have to wonder if it's a combination of heat AND the extended periods in the sun that's doing the damage.

So by that assumption, would we be better off only using the winter sun??

It's the UV bombardment that makes the plastic fragile.. Perhaps there's less UV in the winter time, but I wouldn't really recommend this..
