Open suorce or closed source, it doesn't matter. If yo were right there should be only one Linux distro.

The programs work for all of them, and they all share the same Linux kernel. I don't see a problem.

What I remember is, the programs need to be recompiled for every distro and they all use different installer package formats and each distro has other locations were files, libraries and configurations are stored. That's why I once said good bye to Linux, 20 years ago.

That was over 20 years ago... nowadays there are standards defining where everything should be, and you don’t need to recompile for all distros. All you need to know is that you have an up to date glibc and have the proper libraries installed.

There are 3 different package managers that most distros use, but the most common are RPM and DEB. You can convert packages between, but most packages are available for either.

If you’re going to complain, at least have the proper facts.

It is not all that simple. Fragmentation occurs no matter if it is closed or open source. It is more a matter of how many people are not happy with a situation and try to do something about it.

Closed source does not help collaboration around something, open source does as it makes it both possible and easy. I think it all boils down to whether you want to ensure you keep control and try to monetize, or if you want to relax it? Then there are models on how to monetize open source, but I am not sure I grasp them, is there any study on it?

For all that are not happy about closed source, just embrace AROS, I think that it is the best way forward.

@Marlon

Ok, maybe the Linux community has learned this lesson.

I also prefer open source like you. The question is, who would or should define the standards for the Amiga if something like an RTG system becomes open source?

The community, together. We currently have two common standards, CGX and P96. Ensuring compatibility with both while ironing out bugs and optimizations is the best path forward. Which is essentially what AROS does with their system. Theirs is however very badly optimized, hence why it’s so damn slow on classic amigas.

There are still things that are not properly implemented in cybergraphics.library or the drivers yet like a really working support for the alpha channel. At the moment *** I still need to read, modify, write RGB values instead of just writing ARGB or RGBA. Cybergraphics pretends to support the alpha channel, but I've never seen that it works on OS 3.x. The alpha channel is also not really supported by (most/all ?) picture datatypes.

And then, if this problem should finally get fixed, you need to update all those programs that wanted to use these missing features in the past but couldn't do it.

*** Or are there already any improvements for alpha channel support in OS 3.1.4 or P96 v2.2 ?

Well yeah I mean they are shittier than P96. I actually bought an upgrade to ProBench hoping it would be slightly better on my Merlin, and it was, slightly. EGS I tried first on my Piccolo and it was not too terrible, then P96 came along and supported both of them and worked well.

I forgot about SAGA, that was only for the A2410? I can't remember much about that one, never used it.

And not to sound like some of the other guys, but how long does someone think it would take to do the 20 something years of development and support the Piccolo, Picasso, Merlin, Voodoos, Radeon, Domino, Cybervisions, Indivision, Vampire, UAE, MNT* cards, the other FPGA Amigas, Prometheus, Mediator, Warp3D, ensuring backward compatibility with P96 and Cybergraphics? If it was say less than $10,000 and took a couple weekends then maybe Jens should have done that instead. Or maybe, just maybe that's a monumental task that would cost some $100,000 to pay a coder to do it, and take oh a couple years or so and still not be as fast and as compatible as P96 or CGX. I don't know but maybe the five digit figure that Jens paid was a more financially viable way to go than just throwing something together?

If you try to found any information for SAGA rtg systen or ACT Apollo acceleratos, you will find thousands shittty threads ábout shitty vampire systems.
There is a good reason, why you do not find what you are looking for:
the old rtg-system is SAGE and not SAGA
(I made the same mistake earlier...)

Anyone knows how to retrieve forgotten password and username in the IComp shop? It seems there is an updated version 2.3 available (link), but I can't retrieve it...

Very funny. I assure you I didn't get this information from any Russian site.

Go to the shop, select Login, Password forgotten - you need to know BOTH your e-mail address and your username to retrieve the password :/

Ok, ok, you will have to ask Jens by email for getting an update to v2.3.

And where are these Russian warez sites? I still didn't find that new P96.

It is common in amigaworld. Ripping = Asking money for the work. Even few euros cause shameless cryouts.

So opensource = Free

It should be opensourced actually means, it should be free.

Here are the changes listed in the History.readme

Code:
Changes in 2.3:
- The workaround for the VA2000 card that was in the rtg.library caused some
trouble on regular graphics cards. However, newer versions of the VA2000
firmware no longer require it, and hence the workaround was removed, avoiding
trashed screens when the screen bitmap is smaller than the mode width.
In case you are using this version of P96 with a VA2000, please flash the
latest firmware. All others are good to go with this version.

Angry

I registered at icomp.de, but can not find picasso96. https://icomp.de/shop-icomp/de/shop/...-software.html gust gives a page not found error, and search turns up empty.

Edit: The stupid web-shop did not log me in during the registering/activation procedure, upon logging in I could find it.
