They blew R-Type 2 because they added pointless parallax scrolling. I'm sure if they had dropped it they could have had a much faster and smoother game. And let's be honest, nobody gives a monkeys what is in the background if the foreground is action-packed enough!

If you disassemble the game, you can see why it is so slow. It is doing absolutely millions of small blits constantly to draw the screen. I think reviewers were too generous on the whole, with quite a few high 80's and a 90% mark from Zero.

Could R-type 2 been better than it was ? they were developping from atari ST.
And the game is a straight port from it, right ?

No... but I think it's fair to say it will qualify for the final round

I'm currently playing Project-X for almost a day. I once managed to get to the final boss before I died. Then I used "load state" on the last level and completed the game, but considered this cheating and started over again.
It's hard to put this into words... It's a great game, all right. Beautiful graphics, blasting music, awesome speech samples and sound effects.
But I don't actually ENJOY playing it.
I found that my progress depends mostly not on skill but on memorizing the attack patterns. If I can correctly remember the next enemy, I can usually deal with it. But sometimes I can't, because there are some places where survival depens almost solely on luck (f.e. the fire-spitting volcanoes or the falling rocks - if a rock suddenly appears at the wrong place, I'm history, regardless of everything).
So I feel that it's both boring (playing the LOOOONG early levels over and over again, with everyhing appearing at the same place) and frustrating (when I die again because of misfortune and lose half of my power-ups, which often means I should give up the game instantly).
I play with it because it's a nice game and I want to complete without cheating and not feel beaten by it. But I think that after a while, it becomes a frustrating memory game with a strong luck element. It's not the same as Battle Squadron where I always felt that I'm in control, even in the most chaotic situations.
I must admit that I didn't play Apydia for a while... perhaps I would feel the same if I'd start playing it now. Maybe not.

Are you playing the original Project-X or the Special Edition? If it's the original I know exactly how you feel and almost entirely agree with you (except for it being a 'great' game), but SE does fix most of these problems, by and large. It's miles ahead of the original in terms of sheer enjoyment.

Agony is a nice game. Just like Unreal - a piece of art.

(Well, aside from the fact that the enemies usually have EXACTLY the same color as the background and it's almost impossible to distinguish them. I must admit that - while I hear from everybody how easy it is - I actually couldn't ever complete the last level.)

1 more vote for Disposable Hero (and it appears it needs all the help it can get) as i'm trying to complete it via winuaex at the moment.

Couldn't bring myself to vote for either of the R-Type's as i play these with MAME nowadays and not the Miggy conversions.

The irony being, of course, that if Methanoid put his vote in a few short hours earlier at the end of round 1, Blood Money would have got in

Apidya for me! Project-X has very good graphics and sound but, as a previous poster wrote, I never enjoyed playing it. Apidya is nicer to watch AND play.

Although probably the best ever remains Armalyte on C-64, I still play with it once in a while...

That was rather clear-cut... right, that poll is now closed. I don't have time to do it now, but I'll create the final poll sometime this evening. In the meantime, if a mod could unstick and lock this thread then that would be great, thanks! (Sorry to keep requesting threads to be made sticky/locked etc, you must be getting sick of this one Damien)
