Oh... for those of you who didn't believe me...

This was HYPERIONS announcement, not Amiga, Inc.

Hyperion at least delivers something

Hello everyone!
My apologies that my first post is a request for help, but I noticed this thread while surfing.

I'm really exited about the release of AmigaOS 4 - It looks great.

I'm a bit out of touch with the Amiga but when I heard about this first proper new Amiga product in years I couldn't wait to try it out, so I've ordered a copy.

Please help:
I've looked and looked but can't find anything to run it on!
I now understand it will run on an AmigaOne or an old Amiga with a PowerPC upgrade but haven't found anywhere that sells this hardware.

No doubt I'm just being dumb, but if anyone here would be kind enough to point me in the right direction.

Thanks.

ebay, ebay and ebay.

There is nothing new available to buy, blame Amiga inc, there could be, but they have, as usual, shafted the community. :-(

Oh!

Thanks Mikey_C
I didn't realise - I just assumed a new OS would have new hardware to run it on. Or better still run on the 'standard hardware' I've already got.

eBay, ok. I guess AmigaOne's and PowerPC upgrades must come up quite often if there's a new OS for them. Maybe not so bad, I assume this old hardware will be pretty cheep these days.

Thanks again.

In a way thats part of the problem, people really don't want to pay the mega money the cards fetch, I mean its not like its usefullness justifies its cost.

Wow - that's expensive. Is it brand-new..?
(I thought eBay was mosty second-hand stuff)

Shurely someone must still be making them, then?

Nope, no one is making them. What you have to realise is that the Amiga market is currently working on the "Supply & Demand" principle, Demand waaaay outstrips supply, so unfortunately, prices are very high.

There is a ready to go New AmigaOS4 board available to buy, called the SAM 440EP. However because Amiga inc have decided at the last bloody minute that they really love AmigaOS, the community and everything else, We, the end user cannot buy any new hardware because of their legal wrangling in court with Hyperion. Meaning that although the SAM 440EP board is ready to go, it cannot be released with OS4.

Amiga inc (now Amino) what a bunch of useless muppets.

Thanks for being so helpful guys.

This doesn't sound like a happy situation. I feel a bit daft now, I should have done more research before just jumping in.

At the risk of asking more daft questions:
Why would anyone release an OS for a platform no one can practicably buy??
Why wasn't it written to run on for instance a Mac or PC, or even a 'more standard' 68k Amiga..?

Should I consider cancelling my order?

That depends, if you have no intention of trying to get any PPC/Amiga hardware then yes, if you do at some point in the future, then no. *AMITHLON* is a case in point, it was a very good Amiga Emulator for x86 but because of legal wranglings it means that the sale of this item was eventually pulled.

Your call.

It was not Athlon , but Amithlon. It's not really an emulator like Euae or Winuae.

Quote:
Amithlon is a heavily modified Linux kernel, used as a HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer). This kernel initialises the hardware and starts a 68k emulator (this is the only process running on the Linux kernel) which then boots AmigaOS. In fact, Amithlon is more an “68k processor emulator” than an “Amiga emulator” because it doesn’t emulate the Amiga Custom Chips.
Amithlon is extremely fast due to the following reasons:
a very good JIT emulator written by Bernd Meyer (the author of the WinUAE-JIT patch).
the lack of Custom Chip emulation
there’s no host OS eating up ressources
Another advantage of Amithlon is the fact that the AmigaOS running on it has lowlevel access to all the resources of the computer. You can access CD writers, it could theoretically use AmigaOS’ 3D hardware support (Amithlon authors don’t have a license to use it) and it allowes proper use of a TCP/IP stack.
But Amithlon is not targeted at gamers. Its lack of Custom Chip emulation does not allow you to run old games.
