Lots of c64 tapes were protected, I remember it well !
There were devices such as the Back-up Board or The doubler to link 2 tape units together for copying, some tapes were so well protected that even these did not work, even sometimes the action replay could not back up tapes !!.... Ahh I remember those frustrating times very well !! |

If you mean the .tap images from this project. Yes, it's similar to IPF preservation.

True. Pete only preserves disk games. Anyway, you found the tape preservation link.

Some also had a daft "enter code zz9pluralzAlpha" from the manual/lookup chart/bizarre colour chart - yes Jet Set Willy, I'm looking at you...
Cracking the game to remove that protection would be useful, and definitely a crack, irrespective of the tape loader schemes which being frank everyone knew someone with a tape recorder that would do anything |

yes I remember well, like The Last Ninja 1 or Way Of The Exploding Fist on C64 tape, were damn hard to copy on an audio deck, you had to use these chrome tapes as target tape, normal tapes would not work as a copy. But I believe I hacked the latter game, it got it transferred somehow on disk and made a new loader that made it run straight from disk, I remember I was so proud
And it often required a damn good dual audio deck too. Finally, a screwdriver was also needed to adjust the heads to make it work for certain games!! If the copy was bad, the game would never start/load forever until it ran out of tape. But my dad had a colleague at work who made a lot of homebrewn hardware for the C64 and he made me a sort of dongle where you had to connect 2 C64 datatapedrives, it had a led, a L/R switch to indicate what was play and what was record deck, and some other cable that went into the C64 tape connector. That copied all commercial tapes perfectly, but only at normal speed |

My mates father did something similar. He worked as an electronics engineer and was able to create something that went between the datacassette and C64, I think, ripping the audio in near perfection to another modded tape recorder.
I agree on moving the heads to record certain stuff too, I used to do this, I remember this being very time consuming, but it did work eventually if you were patient enough. Ah! The good old days. Now it's too easy + it can be done in a split second, or near enough. |

I had a very cheap dual deck, but surprisingly, it actually worked with quite a few games.

I had the doubler to link 2 tape units together,
but i used this device only to copy games on tapes sold at newspaper kiosk (i don't know in other countries but here in Italy there were a lot of C64 tapes sold in this way) The copy always worked perfectly with these kind of tapes |

anyway, it was a great time, I also remember those Ocean loaders, the 'turbo' psychedelic colour cycling loaders, or the Hyper Olympic loader that took ages seeing those guys run by and hearing Vangelis, but was worth the wait!
Try to explain that to your kids today with their Wii's and Xboxes! |
