Best way of adding CF to 1200?

I'm new to Amiga hardware having been previously using emulation and have an old 1200 now without a HD.

What would people recommend as being the "best" way of using CF? Some quick browsing suggests I can use IDE or the PCMCIA slot. Is there any speed or other advantage to either?

I reg'dWHDLoad and would like to use that.

Are there any good UK based Amiga vendors to source this stuff from?

You use IDE to boot the system, PCMCIA is for storage.

Have a look here. You can either get a complete package, (adapter+CF+pre-installed) or buy them separate.

I would use an SD card with an 44pin IDE to SD adapter from ebay, and partition and fill it up in WinUAE.
(4GB card is easiest, 8GB needs a new file system, 16GB needs both a new file system and a new device driver 'scsi.device'. More info)

CF or SD in PCMCIA adapter is usually used for moving data between machines.

On IDE they are used as hard drives, on PCMCIA they are removable media like a floppy disk. It's cheaper to simply buy a massive 2.5" hard drive for next to nothing imo, reliable and proven long term storage medium that rarely fails.

I hate it when people argue on EAB but you have to be kidding me right? There is no way I would recommend a spinning 2.5 disk over a CF card nowadays. The CF is faster, it won't fail (for what most of us use them for, we are not writing database transactions right?) it uses less power and is quieter, and probably cheaper. Any spinning disk of this interface type is likely very old and in who knows what condition.

Speed is not an issue, and you can get new (or at least, unused) 2.5" laptop drives for very cheap so that's not a problem either. Naturally don't get an early 90's 1GB hard drive or something like that under any circumstances

But I'd still recommend a memory card because they are easy to connect to modern systems for the purposes of installation, data transfer and backup. Card readers are more common and easier to work with than IDE interfaces.
