Possibly wrong calculation of kB sizes

Hi,

Twist has just upped Darkside for a user, and the information in the zone said '501 kB'.
This isn't correct. The file is only 488 kB.
In bytes, this is 500,700 bytes. But since

1 kB = 1024 bytes

and not 1000 bytes, the rounded value of 501,000 bytes is NOT equal to 501 kB.

the game take 500 708 bytes, rounded to 501 k by the zone.
blame your windows which display 488 ko, not me

Exclamation Windows is right!

NO!
Windows is right!
Again ... 500,000 Bytes is NOT EQUAL to 500 kB.

"Kilo" is Greek for 1000, but on computers this is different and it's 1024 (2^10):

1 MB = 1024 kB (edited)
1 GB = 1024 MB

If the file is, say, 400,823 bytes, it can be rounded to 401,000 bytes, and this is NOT 401 kB but
401,000 Bytes / 1,024 = 391.6 kB
You have to divide the byte value by 1,024 to get the correct kB value. I know I'm 100% right, for I'm still studying that stuff

andreas: Actually - "officially" you are wrong.

Kilobyte = 1000 bytes
*Kibi*byte = 1024 bytes

Evil grin

heheh...nice stuff you dug out there. Thanks for this. As usual, the standardizational organizations are suggesting things, and virtually nobody uses them. This can be compared to the same situation of 'kcal' (kilocalory) and 'kJ' (kilojoule).
Since the end of the seventies, the 'kcal' has officially been declared obsolete, but everyone has been using it ever since until present day. And they use it THE WRONG WAY! If we, in Germany, say "das Essen hat 800 Kalorien" we actually mean "the food has 800 kilocalories"! Here, the 'kilo' has completely disappeared from the unit, so a physician must go mad because this is 1000 times as much!

But nevertheless, according to linguistic usage, I AM RIGHT.
Otherwise, this would require 90% of all software (e.g. MP3 servers and clients, etc.) to be rewritten.
OH HELP. Imagine that!

1024 bytes does equal 1kb

it's sometimes rounded down to 1000 so as not to confuse people

So Belgarath, you too would agree with me that the kB sizes aren't calculated correctly in the zone?

If by "kb" you mean kilobyte then it doesn't really - read the article. The only ones that have got it right "technically" and "offically" are the hard disk manufacturers.

Memory and floppy manufactures do it completely different ways too, and both "technically" and "offically" wrong.

Here is another link on the subject by one of the MAME devs:

infact, your all totally and utterly wrong

KB actually means Kipper Bait, and kipper bait is a small plastic bait used for catching fish, KB weighs 1LB (Large Balloon), so in basic terms LB=KB=LoadOfBollocKs

So Koctet ruling is over. Not a too long ruling I suppose.
