Notes:

We now have two games which can be enjoyed by casual players, which can become addictive to play, so I'm hoping we can get back to the 20+ players we've had in other rounds recently. There are no complex rules (hopefully) this time. And I'm not going to share videos or tips, so players can find out for themselves. But as there are two games, can everyone remember to post like this

Ikari Warriors: xx,xxx
StarRay: xx,xxx

The tables update every 2 hours. The games are not linked this time, so the total is based on each game separately. Each table is worth a medal, and separate league points, so 40 points maximum is possible for winning both games.

Ikari Warriors:
Loading:
Basically, use the IPF. (long explanation below, skip if necessary)

You would expect a game like Ikari Warriors would be very much solid and cracked by now, but this is not the case. I tried the 1.1 and the latest 1.3 WHD Slave from the pre-installed packs on WHDownloads and Turrican. But both played too quickly, and both crashed after reaching the 3rd base. I tried with 030 and with 7 mhz but no joy. The JST version I think did the same. So I tried the ADFs. There are only 2 versions of the game online, both are Paradox cracks, both have graphics corruptions and are not stable. The Galahad fixed version is not available anywhere online. With no joy from the ADFs, the only other option was to use the IPFs. The one linked is from Archive.Org, and is from the Ten Pak compilation [which I had back in the day]. They seem to have swapped some projectile sprites over, and perhaps fixed some bugs?

Players will have to download a special CAPSimg.DLL and copy it to their UAE installation - which mean FS and WinUAE will load up the IPF just like any disk image.

Game Speed - The IPF should be played using a PAL 7 mhz setup, e.g. A500/A600/or unexpanded A1200 [no fast ram]. Anything more than that means the game play is faster, and largely unplayable. Press and Hold '1' to start the game.

Playing The Game / Score Leeching Fix:
This game works on a push system. That is, as long as you push the screen forwards, the enemies appear based on a pre-defined pattern, or wave. If you dont push the screen forwards, the same pattern/wave will appear again and again, creating an endlessly repeating loop. This means there is a leaching issue with the game. If you notice the same attack wave appears twice in a row, try to push the screen forwards by a few pixels, at some point before or during the fight, to stop the same wave endlessly repeating. But dont move ahead by too much!, or a different wave will spawn, and crowd the screen. So could everyone remember to try to avoid the repeating waves bug. It happens as part of the game, when enemies pin you down, but moving forwards always stops that wave respawning.

Landmarks:
I reached the Temple Ruins on my 8th try last week, and so here are the landmarks in the game:

Safe Rock - This is in the middle of the play area, and is safe from enemies. Beyond it waits the first tank.
River - Contains small bridge crossings, green tanks and tracking mines.
First Bridge - very easy, but contains a mine. If you have all lives, you can make it to 2nd bridge from here.
First Base - make sure you have some grenades to blow open the doors!
Second Base - this base has a pair of doors to get though, beyond the first door are some mines.
Endless Swamp - a nasty place, be careful of the helicopters. Easy place to die.
Third Base - nothing special, but two free tanks are waiting on the other side.
Second Bridge - marks the half-way point in the whole game, no mines on this one!
Tank Boss - a metallic tank, fairly easy if you already have a tank.
Three Tanks - this seems to be a trap if you choose the wrong one, and a huge missile blows them up.
Lake - nothing much to see here except a few more waves of enemies.
Wild West - Three quarters of the way through the game now, so almost there. Green tanks wait near the end.
Rock Fort - made up of 4 rocky bunkers. Watch out for some bad collision detection.
Temple Ruins - Another massacre. Waves can be mercyless. Don't get pinned down! Mines and Masks and Traps!
Boss Base - This is the final section of the game, and the floor is now light blue in colour.

New Game: StarRay

It seems the scoring for World Darts is all over the place. I cant see this situation improving, so let's just remove World Darts from the round and play the first runner up in the voting, StarRay.

It's the end of week 1 of this four week round. Two easy games, but only one player from EAB.

Here's finally my efforts. Ikari Warriors is not as good as C64-version, but has some weird charm. Star Ray is technically better, but thought it is a bit slow paced. Quite good Defender-clone anyway

Ikari Warriors: 59,400
Star Ray: 35,280

And here's videos of those efforts:

Oh well, having introduced everybody on EAB only a few rounds ago, it seems it's back to tumble weeds. I had a good time playing these two games this time. And watching the competitors reach for the stars.

Thanks Mailman, el_Pasi and all those who took part! Lets hope there are a few who like R-Type??

I made several attempts to beat my own scores in these two games but without luck...

Certainly I will give it a go with "R-Type" :-)
