regarding an updated ubuntu port, you might take this into account for a more universal, desktop agnostic linux build?

I am currently trying to set up the Linux and Mac compilers, but it's taking way too long, and I'm running into way too many problems, so the PC build is all I can do for now. You can probably create a linux version of the game using an old linux build and the new Windows one. I think currently it's exported as a pure interpreter code. For the final version I'll try to compile it in C.

I don't think I'll work on it any more, it was all done in Unity which is really unsuited for pixel-perfect sidescrolling games. Still, it was a fun experience extracting all these sprites, reading the hidden enemy dialogues and being able to visit all of Barsoom without having to play the original game. I enjoyed finding those eyestalk monsters in the goblin lair which I had never seen before even though I watched my older brother play this game many times.

Aww, that sucks! I miss there being more SOTB-related fan activity!
I really enjoyed playing all the little fan-demos people used to up out back in the day. Now there seems to only be Feral Umbra and my own SOTB Legacy. I really wish that whoever made that [ Show youtube player ] thing would've released it...

Either way, if anyone gets to play Legacy, please report any issues here. As I'll venture into Beast 2 recoding, I'll be slowly fixing bugs in the other 2.

@darkfalzx: what a cool soundtrack. for some reason it reminds me of conan the barbarian?

i wished this revisited track would be optional for beast legacy:

[ Show youtube player ]

it is so freakin energetic, got to love it.

keep up the good work, even it is for win fellows only (atm)

@Cherno: yeah, beast II, my favourite. though i was struggeling to realize this for a long time. beast I atmosphere is so unique.

never liked part 3 that much, but i do understand why people might prefer that version.

btw, the goblin caves have some terrific sounds as well.

you see, it is all about the music for me

Happy New Year!

Finally got my Ubuntu VM set up properly, so here is a Linux version of SOTB Legacy!

It's the same version as the windows one, so no improvements just yet.
Let me know if it works fine for you.

At some point I'll need to edit the controller and menu routines to implement the things I learned on Mystik Belle, but this is a whole other can of worms...

Awesome to hear!
I haven't touched the project in months, but SOTB3 is SO close to be done, it should literally take me a couple of days to finish it.
SOTB2 is the most difficult of the games to replicate, as its versions differ the most across platforms, not just graphically, but more importantly gameplay-wise, with Amiga original not being my personal favorite. I feel like here I will have to take the most liberties, while still keeping it close to the classic look and feel.

Had to update the windows build because Microsoft broke some compatibility with GameMaker Studio. The newest build's only difference is that it no longer runs like molasses under Windows 10.

A fellow GameMaker user! Are you using GMS2 or GMS1.4 out of curiosity?

Still using GMS1.4 for all of my projects, though already migrated a branch of Mystik Belle to GMS2 for the upcoming Switch port. Can't say I like the new IDE all that much - it's way too "space age" for my tastes, but then again - I've been with GameMaker since version 4 back in 2000, and a radical change like this is bound to feel unnatural.
It's also weird to see GMS finally implementing things like delta timing and async controller checks - things I have long ago created custom scripts for (and so far my scripts work better than their internal implementation).

This is impressive stuff. The original Amiga Shadow of the Beast was just so good at the time. Arcade-quality. Nothing ever came close again. Even Lionheart looks rough in comparison

Are there any cheats working in any of the 3 titles bundled in this project?

On my PC I don't know how to emulate pressing & holding down the joystick fire button + mouse button in the opening of the first Shadow of the Beast, which provided you infinite energy in the original Amiga version.

I also tried pressing all the keys on my keyboard during play of this game but nothing activates the debug mode & debug mode functions darkfalzx & others referred to in earlier posts in this thread.

I never implemented proper cheats into the games, but there are debug keys still active. In SOTB1, during gameplay press Ctrl-D, then 9 to restore health, or N to warp to the next destination on the same map (and Ctrl-D again to remove the ugly debug stuff). In SOTB3 there's also the Ctrl-D debug readout, but the only cheat that would be useful to you is N for next checkpoint.
Adding proper cheats is def something for me to consider next time I update this thing.

I've been looking out for any progress on EON and Feral Umbra, but both have been super dead lately. Not sure what that EON Amiga video was - there is really no context for it. As is, it looks like a very early attempt at porting existing PC demo to Amiga.
